Dropped an A2 mag into my JB

First off, thanks to blueman335 for the tip. I have a Hamer Standard (Explorer) that I recently put the the stock bridge pickup, a JB, back into. In all of my other 'bucker guitars I use unpotted, PAF style pickups. The stock JB was quite a surprise. I liked the output and the attitude and was having a lot of fun using it. After reading blueman335's suggestion of swapping out the stock A5 with an A2, I decided to give it a shock. I used an A2 out of a old pickup that had been sitting in my parts box for 11 years.
The result was amazing, completely transforming the voice of the JB. The output and high end seemed to be tamed yet it still retained most of the attitude in the mids that I was liking. But what I really like is the amount of clarity and detail in chord voicings when using cranked amp settings. (My main crunch amps are a '72 Ampeg V2 and a '63 Bassman). Basically what I am hearing is a really great 'hot' PAF wind. Very nice! The JB2 blends very well with the stock Seth I'm using in the neck position.
Finally, a word about the potting on the JB. As I stated, I prefer unpotted humbuckers, and while I completely understand why Seymour and other manufacturers do it, to my ears I much prefer what I hear from unpotted 'buckers. When I pulled the cover from the stock JB, what I saw completely blew me away. The entire pickup was encapsulated in a thick cube of wax. I think I saw a similar picture here on the forum, but this was potting taken to a level that I have personally never seen.
Well I removed as much wax as I could using a soldering gun and a small knife and I am now using the pickup uncovered. Incidentally, I experience no squealing from this or any other non potted 'bucker I use and I regularly play at fairly substantial volumes.
Thank again blueman335 for the tip. I am diggin' the JB2.

Re: Dropped an A2 mag into my JB

I'm not sure why the JB2 isn't a production pickup.

Re: Dropped an A2 mag into my JB

Correct me if I'm wrong, but arent's the Jazz, JB and Distortion the same wind, (same pickup), with the Jazz having an A2, JB A5 and Distortion Ceramic?

Re: Dropped an A2 mag into my JB

no the Jazz is completely different and it has an A5.

The Distortion is a JB with an oversized ceramic

The Jazz isn't wound nearly as hot. It's resistance is in the PAF level, JB's are 16K.

And yes, the JB2 should be a production model! For all the guys that aren't entirely thrilled with the current JB, the JB2 will make them happy.

Ahh, the JB2 strikes again! What a great pickup. It really is one of the best mods on the forums.

Re: Dropped an A2 mag into my JB

So if, for example, I find the JB to have no balls and think it sounds like someone with a stuffy nose, I should swap in an A2?
Or would it retain the no-balls+head cold tone, only with less output? Holy Wars Lite?

Would you say it's great/perfect for 80s PrettyBoy/Glam/Hair Metal ala Poison/Warrant/Nelson/Winger/etc?

Going the other way, would swapping in a regular-sized ceramic unstuff the head and add the missing testicles without sending it into Distortion-style overdrive?

Re: Dropped an A2 mag into my JB

the JB sounds really cool in drop D tuning. No need to swap the magnet.

A5's and the JB's wind are just not a good mix for a lot of guitars. I think the stock tone is unpleasant. But boy, an A2 changes that; the JB8 is also very popular here. Both shift the EQ downwards, and get rid of that 'dentist drill' tone. At 16K it has the muscle, but the A5 scoop takes away some of the power. With mids it packs a punch.

YMMV

Blueman's recommendation is going to be guitar-subjective, of course. I tried a JB2 in a Floyd-equipped Charvel San Dimas, and the tone just went flat.

In your guitar, the stock JB or a JB8 would work better. It's made for bright wood and designs, and misbehaves in mahogany. Of course, you know Floyds don't help tone quality. My guitars are either mahogany or semi-hollow, in other words warm-sounding, and that's where the JB2 shines. No one PU pleases everyone in everything. When the stock JB falls short, swap the magnet.

I like the JB2 in mahogany. I think if you like to have a lot of "bite" you won't like it, but if you like growl, you'll love it. It's very '80's sounding.

JB8 is a metal machine.

the stock jb is the sound of the 80's. more people used that pup in that era than you can imagine

Re: Dropped an A2 mag into my JB

Well, since that's exactly the tone I don't want....... I might just do a JB+ (regular ceramic) and be done with it. Been having great success with ceramic swapping lately, so I may as well go that way.
