Dual-mode pickups

I know EMG makes the 89 and so on, but does any other company make humbuckers with a stack for one (or both) coils? I suspect EMG might hold a patent precluding it, but I live in hope that a passive alternative is or will become available.

(To anticipate one response, I have nothing against active pickups at all, but my fuzz pedals don't act the way I like when they're fed by a low-impedance pickup).

Ibanez True-Duo-Bucker. It's passive. I have a redundant example in my parts drawer. I would gladly sell it to you but your location appears to be half a world away.

Re: Dual-mode pickups

The only directly comparable thing I can think of is the Ibanez True-Duo, but I don't know if you can get them other than in an Ibanez guitar.

A similar idea is the Lace Sensor Duallys that are not stacks but put 2 Lace single coils together to make a humbucker sized pickup.

The only directly comparable thing I can think of is the Ibanez True-Duo, but I don't know if you can get them other than in an Ibanez guitar.

The example in my parts drawer was removed from an Ibanez SAS-36FM when that got upgraded to Duncan Designed HB102b, SC101m and TE101n pickups. The date/model sticker on the underside of the Ibanez HB suggests Korean or Chinese origin.

The adjustable poles coil has hex screws. The slug coil has conventional-looking steel studs. The third coil lies directly beneath the slug coil.

The "coils" portion of the PU is roughly 1/8th of an inch deeper than a regular HB. The elevator screw "legs" compensate for this by being roughly 1/8th of an inch shorter than on a Duncan Trembucker. The overall PU depth is the same as a Trembucker or the majority of F-spaced DiMarzio HBs. Hence, an Ibanez True-Duo HB should fit into your existing guitar without the need to deepen any pickup cavities.

Each of the three coils gives a DC resistance of approximately 6kOhms. In HB or stacked SC mode, the output reading will be roughly 12kOhms. The Ibanez catalogue lists the magnet types for the TDB1 as ceramic and alnico (blend number unspecified). My guess is that the alnico is between the vertically-stacked slug coils and the ceramic is beneath the screw coil.

Wait so one of the humbucker coils is stacked? DAMN!! I thought that concept was my own haha.

Re: Dual-mode pickups

Thanks guys, I appreciate your input. I hadn't realised Ibanez made anything like that before, and I'd completely forgotten about Lace Sensors (I get the feeling from a quick look on their website that a guy could go through a lot of money trying out different Dually combinations!)
