Duct Tape on Pickups...

Reiterating to myself/others: Black duct tape to protect windings on an un-potted pickup in particular, is an awful idea if you ever plan on removing it for some reason; a hair dryer was a necessity to not rip a layer of wire clean off. Need to tell me from ten years ago never to do that again.

Re: Duct Tape on Pickups...

i use paper tape or cloth tape. never something like duct tape or gorilla tape

Re: Duct Tape on Pickups...

I've used electric tape when in a pinch, no problems. It probably also helped that the wax potting prevented the tape's adhesive actually touching the wires.

Re: Duct Tape on Pickups...

I've used black electrical tape over the black cloth that was partially ripped and coming off.
It's already about the right width and if done nicely it actually looks about like hard plastic, like on the dimebucker.
Duct tape has a million+1 uses, but this ain't one of them.

You can always just cut a tiny piece of t-shirt or anything to go around the coils before taping over.

Re: Duct Tape on Pickups...

I ordered a few spools of black cloth tape years ago, and I am not near running out of the first one. Use the right stuff.

Re: Duct Tape on Pickups...

People should never use duct tape unless it's absoutely necessary. It won't hold for years. The sticky glue doesn't harden, but peels off in time, leaving annoying layer goo everywhere...
