Dumb question...

First question round here so... be gentle:laugh2:

Ok, can I connect my guitar directly to my lappy? Use some guitar program to record it without the need for fancy electronic devices? Asides from a big plug to small plug adapter?

Will I get any signal? Or just blow up my speakers?

Inquiring mind with more ideas than sense needs to know.

TIA

Re: Dumb question...

Cool, anyone else with similar experiences?

Why do they sell those adapters then? Just ripping off people or do you get better sound?

Re: Dumb question...

I would probably use a modeler, you can also buy these jack-plug to USB cables to plug your guitar directly into the computer. They have some analog to digital adapter inside of them to give better sound

Re: Dumb question...

I use a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter and run my guitar into iTunes on my computer all the time. No harm at all. I can even hear my guitar through my computer speakers and rock out mini-speaker style.

Re: Dumb question...

Yes, you'd go into the mic in. But preferably the software should be "guitar orientated" (or at least know that its a guitar) Think guitar rig or garageband or somesuch. Then you can play and record to the hard drive, and then have the computer do the amp emulation. check out native inruments' guitar rig demo!

Wow! 4700 posts and never an amp question? surely not....

I have asked so many people this question, and no one has been able to answer it for me. Everyone has said that I need to purchase a few hundred dollars worth of software to make it compatible. I have a 1/4" to 1/8" cable, a laptop with iTunes, and a Vox ToneLab.

I've been wanting to try this out, but I didn't want to blow anything up.

Tried the guitar rig, when it works its good but it crashes my machine like somethin evil... just for reference, this computer never crashed in it's 6 months of use.

Had no electric guitar of my own so wasn't really somthing I could do. I do have an amp, might have posted here when I bought it to identify it but thats it. :)

Gonna put up a thread to find some cool free software thats dependable... lol, that ought to exist.
