Dumb Trade Q (G&L and LP Studio)

So I have THIS

It's a '91 LP Studio "Lite" (hollowed out and filled with "Chromyte" [otherwise known as Balsa]) I got it because I always wanted a "real" Gibson LP. I could afford this one, because it had the usual neck break, and it was missing all it's hardware. Which on a Studio of this age, I would have wanted to change anyway. I keep getting LP's (usually cheap copies) and then getting rid of them, and I thought "Hey, maybe I'm not digging these because they're cheap, what I need is a REAL LP." Well, I've had this one finished and playing for almost a year now, and I seem to pick something else to play, 99% of the time. It's ...nice, it weighs less than any other LP I've had (thanks to the Balsa) and it sounds like it's supposed to (I got a set of "Whole Lotta Humbuckers" for it, they sound great.)
So I had a couple other guitars fixed at a local guitar place, and the last time I was there, they had one of THESE

A G&L Asat Tribute Jr 2. I dug it the moment I picked it up, and it sounded FANTASTIC. I had to make myself put it down to get to work on time, and I've been thinking about it ever since. I bonded with it in a way I never did, with the LP. I mean, it was fun taking a broken guitar, finding all the parts to get it back together, and getting it up and playing again, but I just don't seem to WANT to pick it up ever. I looked up the G&L thing, and they seem to cost about what I've seen Studios go for, but not with the neck issue... Also, they want about the same for the (used) G&L as a NEW one from Sweetwater, but the one at the store feels and sounds absolutey great, they said they set it up before putting it on the rack. And all 3 of the other guitars they've fixed my hack-job work on, play miles better than what I was able to do.

Oh yeah, they had THIS

for me to play thru- it sounded great, but cost more than any of my gear does. Are these some kinda "Super Amp"? I really dug it, but the G&L sounded way better thru it than the LP did.

Traynors are a poor mans plexi. They are a Marshall circuit, hand wired, great sounding and used to be really inexpensive because no one knew about them. I have a YBA-1 and it's amazing. It's also the loudest amp I own, louder than my hiwatt. I almost can't be in the same room with it.

Re: Dumb Trade Q (G&L and LP Studio)

Too bad about the price of the G&L, but they are great guitars. I have seen many used Tributes priced higher than new MAP. One GC manager said, "Well, I priced it that way cause that's what it's worth." High praise, indeed.

I LOVE my G&Ls!!!!

I might look for a USA model, or go for the Sweetwater. At least you'd get a warranty. Or bargain with cash in hand.

Good luck.

Definitely get rid of the "real LP".

What a farce...If you get a hacked up piece of wood that's been mutilated with balsa (or whatever) that plays and sounds like crap, but it has "Gibson" on the headstock, it is praised as a real LP. If you get a guitar with good quality solid mahogany that plays and sounds great, but has a different brand on the headstock and costs 1/4th as much, people are quick to degrade it and make all sorts of corksniffing-nose-in-the-air negative comments about it because it is not a "real LP". Get over it, people.

Get the G & L. It is obviously worth 100 times what the "real LP" is worth TO YOU. It's the guitar that you can't put down. So, pick it up. And never look back. (As an added reassurance/benefit, know that not only will you have the guitar that speaks to you but you also will have a better quality guitar).

Re: Dumb Trade Q (G&L and LP Studio)

Well I was all set to go back and try to trade guitars with them, but of course 2 of my worthless coworkers called in Friday (it's nearly 60 degrees, in MN, in February, on a Friday, SUUUUUUUUURE, you're sick :bs2: ) and now I work every day until Wed. Hopefully their G&L is still there when I can go back.
I took the LP to a different store a bit after I finished it, to see about consining it, and the guy told me he'd give me $100 for it  "It's a Studio, so if it was perfect, it would only sell for $400, it's an ugly color :?: , and the cracked neck reduces it's value by 50%. So to make a profit on it at $200, I can only give you half that." Needless to say, I elected to keep it. :duh:
That's why I'm hesitant to just try to trade it, or sell it online (I got tired of all the "tire kickers" and scam artists on CL, and ebay will keep half my $ anyway). I just don't know, should I keep it, because I THINK I should like it, and cause I'll never get what I paid for it (what ever does though).

Oh yeah, the Traynor amp... I played my guitar thru it, played with all the settings, and it was... OK. The G&L sounded fantastic, immediately, without adjusting anything. Does this mean I'm just not a HB kinda guy, or are the G&L's really THAT good?

So many questions... WHy am I stuck at work, when I could be fooling around with guitars? Oh yeah, I wouldn't have any $ for guitars in the first place, if I wasn't at work...:D

Re: Dumb Trade Q (G&L and LP Studio)

If the LP sounded just OK through a vintage Traynor, I would be willing to assert the LP has issues somewhere, unless the Traynor had not been serviced in 10-15 years.

Re: Dumb Trade Q (G&L and LP Studio)

That G&L looks like a fine guitar. With P-90's it should sound great. Love that color. The price is good and if it's one you can't put down, it needs to be yours. You may have to take a loss on the LP but since it doesn't excite you, it isn't much good to you.
