Dummy Coils

Hello

This is a question for Seymour Duncan, or anybody that can help!
Since there seems to be no way to contact Seymour Duncan directly, or did I miss something?

Question:
I am putting together a '69 Thinline I am looking at the STL-3, STR-3 Quarter Pound Tele pickups. Site says these are not hum-canceling. I would like to install a dummy coil to do the hum-canceling, but their is no mention of these that I can find on Seymour's site. Again, did I miss something?

At this rate of speed I may have to buy a cheap single coil on eBay and push the magnets out.

Seymor Duncan, Anybody???
Help !!!

Thanks

Re: Dummy Coils

GW-
I looked into dummy coils a while back and found it's hard to find much info- Most of it seems to be in relation to the Gibson blueshawk which is one of the few electrics that seems to have been succesful- the primary requirement seems to be that the coil matches as close as possible-

Re: Dummy Coils

Keep in mind, to whatever degree the dummy coil doesn't match your pickup in resistance and impedance, you'll have a corresponding loss of noise cancelling ability. In other words, the less they're identical, the more noise you'll have. Plus, you'll lose some high-end and output level regardless.

Re: Dummy Coils

This was my finding too when I looked into it (for my Blueshawk). Are the two pickups wired in series?

Re: Dummy Coils

i'm pretty sure paralel or series will work because the signals are combined one way or the other-

Re: Dummy Coils

Why do the coils have to match then? This is in line with what I have heard, but I question it...you can put any pickups in sereis or parrallel and have them humbuck.

Re: Dummy Coils

The reason they need to be close to the same is because they noise-cancel by being connected out-of-phase. The amount of noise that a pickup pulls out of the air is dependent on its electrical characteristics. If the two coils don't pick up the exact same signal, they won't cancel completely.

Re: Dummy Coils

Hello All

Thanks for the input.
I guess SD does not make Dummy Coils???

While searching the web I found a drawing at Parts is Parts.com of a Fender Elite Strat with a Dummy Coil but it has no reference to it's value in resistance or inductance.

A little side note: has anyone ever tried a TBX tone control in a Tele and were you happy with it?

Back to Dummy Coils/Hum-Free Singles:
Kinman out of Australia has hum free Tele pickups Mucho-$$$ and Lace.
Any any comments on these?
