Duncan 59's on an Ibanez semi-hollow?

Hello everyone!!

About a year ago I purchased an Ibanez semi-hollow artcore AS 103 (updated version of the 1980's AS 200 models). Its an absolute gem of a guitar, a versatile workhorse.

The pickups (super 58 humbuckers) worked AMAZING for the jazz/fusion stuff I played with a tad little bit of overdrive on it - to great a great John Scofield-like overdrive tone, when played through my VOX AC 30..

However, for playing the straight-ahead jazz stuff which i use a clean tone, I didnt like the tone, found it too trebly because I was looking for a much richer/thicker/darker tone, and I found that even my epiphone les paul worked better for that dark/warm sound (maybe because higher output?), and ive seen many youtube vids of AS models with duncan 59's, and that is the clean sound im looking for.

I wanted to know how does the Ibanez artcore sound/play after duncan 59's for clean tones, and can you still get that great fusion/scofield sound with more overdrive on it???

Mainly what differences, and positive/negatives between the super 58 & duncan 59's, because I havent played through any duncan 59's as yet..

Thankyou!!

i'm sure the neck 59 would be great for what you're after, i haven't tried the bridge 59 so can't comment

Re: Duncan 59's on an Ibanez semi-hollow?

Thanks!
Do the duncan 59's sound too compressed (neck pickup) with some overdrive (through pedal) on it?
Cause I dont really want the "compressed" overdrive sound, looking for vintage tone...

Re: Duncan 59's on an Ibanez semi-hollow?

nope. the 59n sounds like a sweet PAF-type humbucker.

don't those ibanez super 58s have alnico 8 mags or something? could be a bit much for the cleans.

Re: Duncan 59's on an Ibanez semi-hollow?

Yeah they do.... WAY too harsh for the cleans
but great sound with some overdrive...... I still want to get that great overdrive scofield type sound Would I still be able to get that overdrive sound with 59's? Thanks!

i would think so, but this is hard for me to answer as i'm unfamiliar with scofield and haven't played any A8 pickups.

are they standard size mags? guys rate the 59 set with A8, obviously more the bridge but i think i've read of trying in the neck model too, with positive results... do some searches?

maybe consider A2P and pearlys as well, with potential dirt tones and mag swaps in mind

interesting situation
:naughty:

'59's are made for 335's & mahogany guitars (LP's, SG's, etc). Clean, clear, not compressed. Great with overdrive. Some of us use 250K's on the bridge for a little warmth.

Cool, so they are built for that stuff. I'm going to be trying Alnico Pro II tomorrow, because my local music store does not have 59's, whats the difference between the two ?????

I put 59's in the neck and bridge in a PRS SE Semi-hollow. Major improvement. The cleans are very clear and the overdrive is very very nice. Think classic rock.
+1 for the 59's

They're excellent too. They have an A2 magnet, which is a little more flavorful & midrangey, than the brighter A5 in the '59's. Any high-quality PAF will work well for you.

Often, the sound associated with straightahead, clean Jazz guitar tones involves using the neck position pickup AND rolling the tone pot back a fair amount. The amplifier may need to be set be on the verge of break up. You can clean things up a bit by rolling back the volume pot also.

Re: Duncan 59's on an Ibanez semi-hollow?

Hi , the Alnico pro neck is sounding different then the 59neck.
A2 is warmer smoother loser basses.
I wd go 59er set perfect for a semi hollow. you cant go wrong with 59ers!
Fyi:I found the A2Pro bridge very nice in a EPI Jazz L5 hollowbody together with SH2.

Re: Duncan 59's on an Ibanez semi-hollow?

Thanks heaps everyone,

Just played thorugh some 59's on the Mike Stern model, instantly loved that tone!!! Definately the EXACT tone of what im looking for..... Amazing pups!

Didnt like the Alnico Pro II as much as I liked the 59's, so i have already ordered my neck 59 (cant afford bridge at the moment but will get it soon) gold -top!!

I wish I had known about Seymour Duncan before... love em humbuckers

Re: Duncan 59's on an Ibanez semi-hollow?

Udit , i'm not sure if you know but as103 has Super 58 custom on them not
Super 58's .there's a big difference between them . Super 58's are Alnico and
Super 58 Custom's are ceramic magnets. Super 58's are about 3 times expensive.
I was in similar situation, I bought very nicely Built Shecter Semi-Hollow Corsair which has Duncan Designed pups on them(Duncan Designed PUPS aren't made by SD but made by Shecter i guess specifically designed for OEM's)but still thy sound GREAT. since i'm a big SCO sound fun, i decided to replace stock SD designed pups with Super 58's . Ibanez distributers in London sold me S58 customs instead of S58's so after putting them on
i didn't like the sound and was very upset in allegedly S58''s . they sounded thin weak and trebly. I returned them . Ibanez in London admitted that they sold me
S58 Customs and i was asked additional £50 for each of genuine Japanese S58'S. so again don't be fooled , they put CUSTOM 58'S on cheaper models or Korean Ibanez'. so again difference between S58 and S58 Customs are Gigantic .

Hope it helps

Re: Duncan 59's on an Ibanez semi-hollow?

I just installed dimarzio 36th anniversary PAFs into an Ibanez AS83 hollowbody, and I REALLY wish I had went with the 59s.

I install the 59 set backward in anything I put them in. It keeps the polepieces further from the neck and bridge, which very slightly brightens the neck and warms up the bridge, which they need.

I agree with this man !

My bro's Ebody LP has a set of '59s in it and it does sound GOOD.

It will also sound magical in an Artcore :cool2:

Re: Duncan 59's on an Ibanez semi-hollow?

Seymour Duncan has changed many of our lives.

Erm... are you saying you're cat...? Nine lives and many of them've changed by Seymour Duncan...?

Or our lives mean you and the other personalities as well? Or just the voices that make you do things to pets?

Do you care to expand a bit on this, or you're off your meds again? :naughty:

Howdy,

Udit: I'm no Jazzer, but I enjoy clean tones with my ES-335, too. I've got a set of '59s loaded in my 335 and I'm quite happy with the tone. The neck can be a bit "boomy", but perhaps it's because I grew up on Fenders and Rickenbackers..
My Jazzer friend is a big Pat Metheny fan and he says my 335 is his second favorite Jazz rig after his big 175. Good luck!
