Duncan '78/EVH Tinkering?...

Hey Guys,.. I was wondering if anyone on here has "tinkered" around with their '78 pup?... by that I mean swapped out mags n' stuff?...

If so,. I was wondering what the effects of this tinkering yielded in terms of Tone and Sound?

I've got a nice set of AV's coming that I think I'm going to swap out to try and tighten up and brighten up my '78 ...

Thanks in advance,
Rick

IDK, the '78 is already bright with 500k pots. I put an Alnico 8 mag in the '78 and I didn't like it as much when compared to the stock version. Sure it tighten it up but there was too much compression for my taste. It's just one of those p'ups that are good as is, IMO.

Hmm... don't know for sure if I'd call the '78 "Bright",.. maybe in an Ash/Maple guitar... Mine is in my 95 Custom Shop Soloist that's Poplar body maple/ebony FB. .. and it's pretty "warm" sounding to me,.. and that's got 500k's and an OFR w/ factory steel block on it..

Hopefully the AV's will take it closer to where I'd like to be,...

I'm using a alder tele w/ a maple/rosewood neck. I also prefer using 250K pots with my bridge p'ups and the '78 is currently using a 500Ks.

I never tried an A5, so post your thoughts about it.

poplar is very similar to alder. you want it to be brighter? how close are you setting it to the strings?
