Duncan Antiquity Filtertron

Does this exist? I need one.
Im thinking around about 5 to 5.5K, A2

Its for an esquire. I have a Cabronita Fideli'tron in it now, and while its ok, its not GREAT.
Basically the only thing wrong with it is, it doesnt have enough power.
I have it so close to the strings I sometimes push the strings down onto the
poles and this makes noise.
I tried removing the excess pole material from the underside which helped but
not enough.

I really dont wanna spend TV Jones money but if I have, to I guess I will. :thumbsdow
them ****s are expensive lol

it reads 4.6K, not sure the magnets but Im guessing A5

Re: Duncan Antiquity Filtertron

If you have gone to the time, trouble and expense of putting together a bespoke La Cabronista Especial, it seems churlish to skimp on the pickup.

SD's Filter'Tron based pickups are in the Custom Shop line and priced accordingly.

TV Jones pickups are expensive, partly because the company is too small to have the economies of scale of SD, DiMarzio et al, partly because they know darn well how good their pickups are.

I have a self-build Warmoth LCE. TVJ Classic Plus does the business.

Re: Duncan Antiquity Filtertron

They are by no means hot pickups and produce a clangy and brite sound. What are the pot values in your guitar? 500k?
TV Jones Classic Plus would be a treat.

the guitar (squier cab) came with 250K pots, then I tried 375K, and finally 570K which are perfect.

Re: Duncan Antiquity Filtertron

Get the TV jones, you will not be dissappointed.
If you can't afford it either save or wait for one to come up on ebay.
Or just turn your amp up

Re: Duncan Antiquity Filtertron

i think the TV Jones classic plus is the one.
7.8K with 43 wire is roughly equivalent to 6.05K
with 42 wire so....

perfect!

(42 wire is 77.57% as conductive as 43 wire, or in other words 43 wire is 28.92% more resitance than 42

Re: Duncan Antiquity Filtertron

im sure tv jones are a 'better' pickup than the MIK Fildelitrons but these are perfectly fine
just a tad underwound. If I could add about 1,000 feet of wire to the coil they would be perfect.

Setzer has his pickups stupid close (.8mm for the neck) but he uses 11s and I use 9s so im more likely
to press the strings down enough to hit the poles. (i guess)
Even in the TV jones setzer pup video you can tell they have them stupid high too.

I like the specs of the classic plus better than the setzers, the setzers are 6K but with 42 wire.
My favorite pickup is early broadcaster which also uses 43 wire.

Re: Duncan Antiquity Filtertron

I'm confused.

You opened this thread, reluctant to pay T.V. Jones prices but interested in SD Custom Shop pickups. What's the difference? Obviously, TVJP oblige you to choose between a range of set models whereas MJ can tweak the specs of a one-off pickup to exactly what you ask for. Either option costs a lot but will be worth it.

i was hoping there was a stock model. I think pickups in general are way overpriced.
sure a $200 TV Jones will sound better than a $20 GFS, but only nominally so.
certainly not 10 times better.
Yes I know youre paying for hand wound, small shop USA and all that-I just want tone.
off the shelf , mass produced tone.

Plus putting a $200 pickup into a $179 guitar seems, weird.

Re: Duncan Antiquity Filtertron

To the right player, a $200 pickup will sound 20x better than a $10 one.

Should have asked earlier, why amplifier(s) do you play through?

Some of what the respondents in this thread like about TVJ 'Trons is they way that they interact with a nice all-valve amplifier.

Re: Duncan Antiquity Filtertron

what about GFS or Gretsch? do either make a good filtertron?

The GFS 'Tron style pickups aim for the look rather than the sound. They are really just mini-humbuckers with twelve exposed polepiece screws and an ugly metal cover.

Despite my local guitar shop being a Gretsch dealer, the only modern Fender-ownership era 'Trons I have tried were in a Stump-o-matic signature model. I found these little better than the Fidelitrons fitted in the Fender MIM La Cabronista Telecaster.

If you were to make an A/B comparison between the MIM LCT and its 2011 MIA Tele-bration equivalent, the American guitar is lighter, more resonant, has better hardware and the pickups have that all-important presence and attack that the Fidelitrons never quite achieve.
