Duncan Custom Custom SH-11 for Les Paul Classic (thin neck)

Here`s the deal. I´ve scored a georgeous 2001 Gibson Les Paul Classic in lemondrop finish, plain top. Looks a lot like the Slash VOS Signature LP.

Right now it has installed a set of Slash APH-II`s. All 500k Gibson pots, orange drop .22 caps, MODERN WIRING.

I was thinkin bout wiring it up with 50`s style circuit... cant stand the modern wiring, the pots are like an on-off switch.

Since my LP has a super thin neck (60`s slim taper), maybe swapping the wiring to 50s style with the Slash set could transform the guitar into bright city. Dont get me wrong, I LOVE bright-y, twang-y LP tones like my 60s, 70s and 80s idols (Joe Walsh, Page, Slash, Perry, Ronson) but i play in my bedroom at moderate/low volume with my half stack (Marshall Vintage Modern 50w with Bogner/Carl Martin/MXR od/dist pedals into a 4x12 with Greenbacks).

The question is... maybe the SH-11 could be the perfect solution for this particular guitar, balancing the tone to avoid ending up with a thin sounding LP if i go with 50s wiring with orange drops + thin neck+ low volume situation? I´ve got a TB-11 in my BC Rich Gunslinger superstrat (alder/thin maple neck/single volume pot)) and it does great job fattening up that guitar, without mushing it up (instant EVH/Steve Stevens tone).

That's not a modern vs 50's wiring problem. Someone probably installed the wrong taper of pot.

Mhhh... ive got two brand new Gibson audio taper 500k pots to replace the 300k vol pots that came with the guitar originally.

Try linear taper for volume and audio taper for tone and see if that helps.

Ill try that, thank you for the suggestion.

Maybe modern wiring + treble bleed is the ticket for these Slash APH-II´s? :33:

Re: Duncan Custom Custom SH-11 for Les Paul Classic (thin neck)

50's wiring will brighten it up, but the off-switch effect is controlled by the taper of the pot more than anything else.

Re: Duncan Custom Custom SH-11 for Les Paul Classic (thin neck)

50s style wiring with a linear volume pot is great. There are 2 benefits: No need for a treble bleed and the taper gets drawn out nice and long until the end. Basically it works the way it's supposed to.

I liked the CC in my traditional pro, it was just hotter than I wanted at the time. I use a Mesa Road King and prefer my pickups to have a lot less power.
