I'm assembling an alder super strat for hard rock - glam - hair metal , 80 's ...

I was going to order the tb-4 jb for the bridge but i misleaded the code and i oredered a tb-5 . I'm from italy so i don't think there is the exchange policy here.

Before i put the tb-5 to ebay , what do you think about it ?
Can be the tb5 good for 80 's lead stuff ?
I'm looking for that kind of high gain liquid & cutting lead that i love (Ratt , Poison , Dokken , Europe , Queensryche ..... i could go over but i think you guess the point :14: )!

Please don't suggest me magnet swap cause i have problem here to get magnets.

Thanks for your help and sorry for my poor english!

Re: duncan custom & hard rock ?

Yeah, I'm sure it will do the job.

I know you don't want to know about magnets, but the Custom Custom would be PERFECT for you and is only a magnet swap away.
I've been blown away with the Custom Custom since I got it, it's just the 80's big hair stuff all over.
Can't you get a magnet from abroad?

Re: duncan custom & hard rock ?

Thanks Diocletians , btw i don't like custom custom couse his flabby & loose low end for power chords work. And yes , here is more difficult getting magnets.

So Do you think that the regular custom could do the job ?

Any other opinion here ?

Re: duncan custom & hard rock ?

I have a Custom in my Charvel. I think you'll be happy with it, based on your description of what you are using it for.

Re: duncan custom & hard rock ?

Thanks DMyers77 !

Bump For other opinions :P

Re: duncan custom & hard rock ?

Try the Custom first and see how you like it. I think it should work for you, but the JB will still have the best lead tone. I have many guitars with many difference pickups and none nail that lead tone.

Have you tried one and had this happen? I have one in a 1988 ESP Horizon and it nails Priest dead-on. IMO the lead in The Hellion sounds pretty **** good, and this gives it.

I've not tried any other Customs, this is my first.

No i haven't tried it, cause it is not arrived and the guitar is not finished to assembled. Work in progress !!

Re: duncan custom & hard rock ?

Or, my usual answer when asked about the Custom.

The Custom is the sole proprietor of the hard rock genre. Put it in a strat, put it in a Paul. It SLAYS.

Re: duncan custom & hard rock ?

The custom will be great for what you're doing. In fact, in an alder bodied Strat I think it might be better than a JB.

The nice thing about a JB in a S/S/HB Strat is that it sounds even better with Strat 250K pots than it does with 500K pots.

I have a Custom in a dual humbucker Strat. There I use it with 500K pots and wouldn't use 250K pots.

That's a good point about the JB - if this Custom is going in a Strat with 250K pots you might want to go for a JB instead.

Good point Lew, didn't think about the pots. Although it's probably easier and definitely cheaper for him to just change the pot than sell the Custom and buy a JB. He might have to back off on the tone control a little when using the single coils but it sounds like he won't be needing them much for what he's doing anyway.

Re: duncan custom & hard rock ?

It's a just 1 humb guitar , like 80 heroes ;)

You have actually tried a Custom Custom?
It might be flabby for thrash metal but it's ideal for the stuff you described. I'm kinda lost now.
How tight do your power chords need to be to play Poison and LA Guns?

Re: duncan custom & hard rock ?

probably i 'm not an alnico 2 bridge guy :D I prefer Alnico 5 or ceramic type ;)

But for me custom custom low end was tu buttered , muffled, and the high end was too rounded , probably for my tastes it is better for classic rock style.

It doesn't have that bite and cut like jb or dimarzio super distortion

It's funny you should say that, since I find the Custom Custom to be the closest Seymour Duncan I have to the DiMarzio Super D.
But no matter, if you don't like it, you don't like it!

Re: duncan custom & hard rock ?

IMHO it isn't closest at all. I Think it is much closer to the DMZ Air Zone than the SD.
