which of these two sets would be the best for a tone that is fat, tight, clear with ultra harmonics in a basswood RG?
i want a vocal lead tone that will not be shrill or harsh in high gain situations
and with a solid, tight deep rhythm tone big and purcussive :)

i have the airzone airnorton in one of my strats. i think you described this combo exactly. i would go with it.
really? the ONLY thing that worries me is that many say the air zone has too little highs or presence? true? is it sharp enough to have cut in the mix?

Re: duncan custom/jazz vs air zone/air norton set

Having never heard the airzone airnorton combo but knowing what the Jazz and Custom sound like it was an easy pick. From what you described in your needs, I think the Jazz/Custom would be a good match.
The Custom has great punch in mahogany and decent highs. In basswood, which is a larger-grained wood and not as dense, I would think the Custom would have a bit more high-end and still have the fatness. Especially with the Jazz right above it. I'm wanting to eventually try the Jazz in the neck of my Les Paul, replacing the Pearly Gate that's in there now. I love the PG's but I've grown just as fond of the Jazz since acquiring the Schecter with one in it's neck.

the airzone sounds very punchy and it cuts great in alder but basswood is a little bit warmer than alder. i think the air zone is better defined in alder than basswood. so i would go with the custom for the bridge. again for the air norton. it is alot and i mean a hell of lot better in a brighter wood. and fyi. alder is brighter than basswood :)

Who are the "many" that said the Airzone has too little highs or presence? Not true, IMO!!!

The AirZone is a different beast than the Custom. The Custom has more highs, more crunch, more open singing voice, and is "tighter". The Airzone has more mids, more bass, and a deeper singing voice which DOESN'T get muddy in comparison to similar pups with similar tone EQ (this is a great mystery to me - a pup with this much mids, bass and clarity) If you're into AC/DC-Aerosmith tone, then go with the Custom. If you like the old Black Sabbath tone, the Airzone is your best bet.

Both are great pups, but they have very different sound IMHO. Hope this helps.

i was told to use a 1 meg volume pot with the AZ/AN set? dimarzio said for basswood it would make the set more bright and closer to putting it in alder?

In my RG1527 7-string I have the Custom/Jazz combo. They perform very nicely under high gain. "Open" is the best term I can come up with. The Custom does chugging rhythms very nicely while the Jazz can handle the cleans as well as articulate lead runs. No experience with the Dimarzios, though.

the custom sound balanced in the basswood bodied RG?

Re: duncan custom/jazz vs air zone/air norton set

I would say yes, it does sound very balanced. It is not overly scooped, nice and punchy .I like to adjust the pole pieces until I can what I want. It seems to me to be a very pure sounding pickup. It won't mask any mistakes. Tha Jazz does this as well. That is why I think they are a very good match.

that sounds great cause i play shred leads and want each note to be heard and seperate from the others,if you know what i mean?
like if i play a fast 64th note runs,i want it stacato, not blurry, real attacky and clear but not harsh either?
i dont know how else to describe it? i had the JB and it had too much sing. when i played 64th note runs ala gilbert, malmsteen the JB had to a hard time keeping up :laugh2:

I think you want EMG's man, ive never heard passives that can keep up with EMG actives.

IIRC, didn't RG_2570 get the Zakk set and dislike it?

Perfect description! You've been asking about the Custom for a heck of a long time, bite the bullit and pick one up.
