Duncan Custom not working for me... suggestions?

Hi guys. I've recently screwed together a Warmoth-based superstrat. Maple neck, black korina body, Sustainiac and Duncan Custom in the bridge. It's a great player, but i'm yet to be convinced the Custom is the right pickup for my needs.

I'm looking to set it up as a 80s/90s hard-rock and metal machine, and I want to gift myself a guitar that makes tapping, pinch harmonics, dive-bombs and squeals as easy as possible. My bread and butter playing is rockabilly, surf, blues, groove and roots, and my bread and butter guitars are teles or strats. But I also like to rip up a bit of Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Dimebag, and old Slayer on the fretboard from time to time. This guitar is intended to scratch that itch.

I knew the Custom was a hot wind pickup before I bought it, but my ears are telling me it's a little too hot, nor is it as dynamic or articulate as I was expecting. It's all woof and no snarl/bite through my rig. And annoyingly, at this point in time, my tele is a far superior tapping/squeals/80s solo trickery axe.

I've tried to shape the tone/response via height adjustment, but I can't really get it where I want it to be. I know the guitar has plenty of bite in it - I can hear it in the neck pickup (when Sustainiac mode is inactive). But flicking between the neck and bridge pickup positions it sounds like the humbucker has the tone knob rolled back halfway... this EQ curve doesn't agree with me at all.

I think the first step is to switch in a lower output pickup, maybe even an Alnico, but I need to strike a balance with my Sustainiac install - the lower the bridge pickup output, the less effective it becomes.

Can anyone recommend a pickup that might suit me better?

I struggled with the Custom too with your same complaints until I raised the pole pieces some. Now I love it.

I might not go lower output, but even hotter with a pickup that has more highs. Black Winter has tons of snarl and bite. The Distortion has tons of snarl and bite. Dimebucker could be another option as well. Though, IMO, looking at the Limba body and a Floyd Rose, my guess would be a distortion would be optimal. In general I prefer the black winter, but I have always found Limba a little less emphasized in the low mids, where the distortion seems like it might excel.

i'd try a jb. it's not lower output but it should scratch your itch

Re: Duncan Custom not working for me... suggestions?

I would look at the distortion. The custom is a much darker sounding pickup and that maybe where you're not getting the right sound.

Re: Duncan Custom not working for me... suggestions?

Lots of love for the Distortion I see... definitely food for thought. But my fear is with pickups as hotly wound as this is they won't offer me the dynamics and touch response i'm after (or used to with single coils).

I was actually thinking of going in the complete opposite direction... a Dimarzio 36th Anniversary PAF. I figure that might offer a bit of useful ground between what I typically play, but with enough range/scope to let me get my old school metal chops on too.

Re: Duncan Custom not working for me... suggestions?

Go "Big" Custom. Stick a double thick ceramic magnet in your Custom. You won't regret it.

Re: Duncan Custom not working for me... suggestions?

If you can't return/exchange the custom, try a magnet swap. Replacing the stock ceramic magnet with an Alnico 2 magnet will make it a Custom Custom - a GREAT sound in maple neck/ Floyd Rose super Strat!

You can get them from addictionfx on eBay for about 5 bucks. Instructions for magnet swapping are on the forum. Use the search button and enjoy!

Others have recommended it already, but I took one look at that guitar after reading you didn't love the Custom and I think I actually said "Distortion." out loud.

I still don't know how the guys are recommending you Distortion and JB while your ears are telling you that the Custom is a little too hot for you!!

I'd recommend swapping the ceramic magnet with an Alnico 2 before replacing the pickup, making it a Custom Custom.

If it doesn't work for you, try a LOWER output model. I'd suggest Perpetual Burn, so dynamic and articulate pickup with less output.

Re: Duncan Custom not working for me... suggestions?

I have the distortion in the bridge of my guitars and it is surprisingly dynamic when it comes to picking and volume knobs. I've been using it more and more for my cleans.

Because he said he wanted a guitar for VH-Slayer. A hotter humbucker will indeed do that better. His reasons for wanting a cooler pickup also really were not reasons to not go with a hotter humbucker. But if one is actually looking for hot and articulate humbuckers, those definitely exist.

Re: Duncan Custom not working for me... suggestions?

The Jason Becker Perpetual Burn is also worth looking into if you want a medium output pickup that has tons of articulation, especially with maple boards and floyd roses.

Re: Duncan Custom not working for me... suggestions?

Custom Custom is as 1984 as you can get. Put an A2 in it and rip!

Yeah, that would work for that, but might not do as well for the Pantera and Slayer. Also, IMO, limba can be somewhat tricky to match a pickup to. (Note that I have a limba SG in my avatar) Just going with what I have noticed about my guitars made of limba and what the OP is saying.

One of the things I have noticed about limba is that it can be a little reduced in the low mids, while accentuating certain high mid frequencies. Note, I am aware woods will vary, and black limba probably more than most, but in most of my applications, it has been somewhat consistent. I might for that reason hesitate to put a JB in there.

I think that he needs a lower, more articulate humbucker that keeps the balance with his Sustainiac...

I still recommend trying the Alnico 2/Alncio V swap, or a Perpetual Burn.

Re: Duncan Custom not working for me... suggestions?

In my little experience with Limba-made guitars, A3n/A2b, A3n/UOA5b and A4n/A8b mag combos on PAF-ish p'ups gave the best overall results.

HTH,

Re: Duncan Custom not working for me... suggestions?

More articulate has absolutely nothing related to heat from my experience. A Black Winter is VERY articulate.

In my limba guitars, they tend to be somewhat picky. I like the idea of an a4n/a8b magnet combo. I may have to try that. Any particular PAFs you had good success with in limba?

Re: Duncan Custom not working for me... suggestions?

In all of my guitars, the Custom has tons of mids and tons of highs: lots of bit and snarl. Don't give up on it; if you can find the "thick" ceramic magnet, that will make it really aggressive. Otherwise, the JB is really the 80's pickup and with plenty of snarl and harmonics for days.
