Duncan Custom regular vs Trembucker?

I've been thinking about ordering a slightly overwound Custom, with the goal of shaving off a hair bit of the high end, getting a little more growl in the mids, and maybe fattening up the bottom end a little bit. But this morning, I was looking at the lineup and see that the Trembucker version has a hair bit more resistance. I realize that this is because the bobbins are slightly wider, but would this also have the same effect as a slightly overwound regular Custom or not? Something tells me that it isn't going to make any difference because the number of turns is probably going to be the same.

Anybody know?

Under winding will make it brighter.
But you’re probably hearing the upper mids. Under winding the pickup will shift the resonant peak higher.

You can’t really use resistance as a measure of anything unless all the other factors are the same. It’s the number of turns on the bobbin that matters.

Re: Duncan Custom regular vs Trembucker?

The Trembucker will have the same number of winds, but the total length of the wire will end up being longer vs. the regular Custom, due to the size difference of the bobbins. That's why the resistance if the Custom and Trembucker are slightly different, with the Trembucker being slightly higher. I don't think it's enough however to drastically change the tone. They want the Custom to sound like the Custom, regardless of it being a standard width or Trembucker.

Now, I don't know how much it needs to be overwound to get the sound you're looking for, but I do know that if you go to the custom shop, they'll nail the sound you're looking for.

Good luck.

I have had a Black Winter trembucker and a Black Winter bridge humbucker in the same guitar, and I didn't notice much difference in tone.

It's really hard to tell, IMO. Pickups are kinda like microphones and speakers in that every one sounds ever so slightly different even when they're the same model, IME.

The Gibson 490 T vs R is the same wind, same turns, but the wider spacing of the bobbins makes the pickup about .3K more for the neck and bridge.......this is with 42 gauge wire. The 43 would of course have a bigger K gap due to the wire having more length/turns and also being more ohms/foot generally.

Thanks, everbody, this confirms my suspicions. I was thinking if I had the regular Custom bumped up to around 15k, it would get me what I want. But that's something I'll have to call in and visit with somebody about when the time comes.

Yeah, I can't imagine a Trembucker version sounding much different. But you also might look at the Custom Custom before getting something custom made.
