Duncan Custom series magnet swaps

I bought a guitar that has an SH-11 Custom Custom in the bridge, which has an alnico 2 magnet. If I swap that with a ceramic magnet does that pretty much make it an SH-5 Custom?

Re: Duncan Custom series magnet swaps

Not pretty much; it literally turns it into an SH-5!

...and an A5 will turn it into an SH-14 Custom 5.

:)

Re: Duncan Custom series magnet swaps

Thanks! I just wondered because the BMT frequencies are different, but I guess the mag swap takes care of that. Now just have to find a good place to get a ceramic magnet...

Re: Duncan Custom series magnet swaps

From A2 to A5 to ceramic the output gets stronger, the attack increases and the resonant frequency increases.

While highly unpopular in this community, I would be suspicious of any claims of stronger bass relative to the mids. In all likelihood, these will only be anecdotal and qualitative assessments that will not be backed either by solid theory or by measurement.

I'll happily defer to people who are well versed in the science of pickups.

Well you sound like you're pretty well versed yourself! Thanks again for your help.

Nowhere near as much as I ought to be for being as cynical as I am, but I thank you.

I will say that I am in agreement with those who say the character of these pickups change pretty dramatically...

FWIW, I really like all three versions.

Well looks like I will have to remove the cover as well and then put it back on. But oh well. It's getting done.

Re: Duncan Custom series magnet swaps

You can also put a degaussed A2 magnet to get you as near as makes no difference to an IM1.

Re: Duncan Custom series magnet swaps

Well hell, I can't even find a ceramic magnet for sale.

Re: Duncan Custom series magnet swaps

Don't overlook the A8, UOA5, and thick Ceramic.

Re: Duncan Custom series magnet swaps

Custom 8's are popular here, and there's also a number of fans of Customs with an UOA5, especially if you play blues or classic rock.

Re: Duncan Custom series magnet swaps

Well I play mostly metal so I'm definitely going for a ceramic. I've since learned that ceramic 8 is the industry standard. Now I just need to know which size SD uses for the SH-5.

Re: Duncan Custom series magnet swaps

So I got this guitar today, and the SH-11 is not bad actually, but it seems to lack power. So I looked up some vids on the SH-5 and it sounds a little better but still seems to lack the power I want. I would consider the JB but it's a little loose on the low end. So enter the Dave Mustaine thrash factor, which SD says is tighter and a bit scooped. Problem is there are no demos of it so looks like I'm waiting for a bit to see if some samples come up.

Re: Duncan Custom series magnet swaps

There should be samples of it available soon. As far as the others lacking power...you mentioned some pretty powerful pickups, so I was wondering why you think some pickups lack power. You can also look at actives, as you can get the EQ you want with all the power you might need.

Re: Duncan Custom series magnet swaps

Possibly because I'm used to playing with actives I guess. My other guitar has the EMG 57 66 set, and those absolutely melt faces. I wanted this guitar to remain passive but if I have to get actives I will. But they will be different than the 57 66.

Re: Duncan Custom series magnet swaps

The thing is this guitar has a 24.75 scale with a mahogany body so I worry about a big sounding pickup like the PATB2 getting too dark and mushy sounding. Plus it's regular spaced.
