Duncan Custom Shop pickups used for Hagar-Era Van Halen.

According to a recent post by Seymour Duncan's Facebook page,

""Just a few Plexi's, nothing crazy or anything... Here's Eddie's rig in 1986 when he started using a few custom shop Seymour Duncan's.""

Oh...REAARRRRRY??

To my query about what it was, the admin replied: "Ian MJ in the custom shop still has the specs for those, I've seen them. I'm sure if you call our custom shop, she'll make you a pair."

Vewwwwwy Interwesting! I'm not really chasing that tone, nor can I afford a CS pickup at the moment, but I think there's some folks who would be interested in the basic specs of it.

i believe eddie himself was the one who said to seymour dunc inc. the (ceramic) custom is hot, the (a2) custom custom is too cool, could you make an a5 thats juuuusst right? thus the customcustomcustom.

I actually signed up on the Duncan Forum during the time when the A5 Custom was being discussed, because I knew it was the hole between the Custom and Custom Custom.......the C5 was almost called the Custom Custom Custom.

Provided the amp, guitar, and player can get the VH sound, I've heard many pickups that nail the sound, such as the 59, C5/59 hybrid, C5, and 78.

I'm not a VH tone chaser, but I think my favorite pickups in that range are the C5/59 hybrid, Unoriented Roughcast Custom 5, and even the Brobucker is in that range.

I think VH tone chasers put more thought into the whole thing than VH himself though. He already knows his guitar, hands, and amp are the key, so he probably uses anything that's a good toneful pickup that's not too vintage and not overly hot.

Please don't start rumors. You'll actually have people believing that crap.

^You need to fix that , no tone coming thru

Re: Duncan Custom Shop pickups used for Hagar-Era Van Halen.

Many historical sources imply it was actually Valerie who suggested the A5.

No, it was Annette Funichello. According to Bobcat Goldthwait, she was almost the lead singer for Van Halen, and that's why the live DVD is called "Live Without Annette".
