Duncan Designed P-90 and Squire Telecaster

Hi,

Can someone please tell me about these pickups and how they are wired in the Squire Telecaster Custom II guitar?

What are the magnets made of? Is this pickup built like the STK-P1 p-90 stack®, or is it a real single coil PU?

Thanks

Howard

welcome to the forum howard.

i am sure the duncan designed p90 is not a stack but a real single coil. not sure which duncan model it is modelled after (or magnets used) but i will wager a guess its the vintage p90.

the tele custom ii is wired like a tele.

position 1 - neck
position 2 - neck and bridge
position 3 - bridge

Dan,

Yes, the switch works lkie that, but the controls are more like a Gibson. It has a vol and tone for both pickups. A real tele has only a 3-way switch, one vol and one tone.

However, unlike my p90 equiped Epiphone Casino, I can turn the vol down on one of the PU's with the switch in the center position and I still get sound. On the Casino, turning one volume off causes there to be no output at the jack.

Also, turning the tone down seems to lower the overall output of the guitar so that I have to turn up the vol to compensate. There're a lot of cool tones in this inexpensive guitar though.

I would really like to see a schematic of the wiring, including component values etc. Are there any Duncan engineers that hang out here?

Thanks

Howard

i forgot about the pots!

i believe they are wired like a les paul. that is two p90s with its own dedicated volume and tone pot each and a 3-way switch.

in position 2 where both pickups are on, turning down either volume knob will affect the respective pickup it is wired to. i.e. if you turn down the bridge pickup's volume, you will still be able to hear the neck pickup and vice versa.

not sure about the tone lowering the overall volume. is it a drastic drop in volume? all my guitars do exhibit a slight drop in volume when the tone knob is turned. it is due to the treble rolled off hence the perceived drop in volume.

Basically, it means your Tele is wired like this: 2 HB's dual volume/tone

If you wanted to mess with it, you could aleviate the problem somewhat by reversing the two connections on the bottom of each volume pot. (In that diagram.) But thats still not ideal.

Re: Duncan Designed P-90 and Squire Telecaster

Thanks for pointing out the drawing. I know I really could just pop the pickguard off, but I just changed the strings. I should have looked at it when I had them off. Do you think the pots are 500 KA? I thought single coils liked 250KA.

These are really hot pickups so I usually have to keep the volume pots at around 2 or 3 or it really overdrives the preamp hard. With the vol this low, the loudness effect of the tone pots is quite pronounced. If I dime the vol controls, it's not noticable at all though.

Also, does anyone know the impedence of these PU's and if the magnets are ceramic, alnico (2?,3?,4?,5?)

Thanks

Howard

OK

Having established that the Duncan Designed p-90 as used on the Squire Telecaster Custom II is a stack like the STK-P1 p-90 stack®, has anyone here used a pair of these and installed the series/split/parallel mod. Is it worth it?

Thanks
