Duncan Designed vs Duncan

I have a new Samick RL-3 that has the DD HB-102 set in it. I have been told it is similar to a Jazz/JB combo. Is this the case? They sound really good but am I missing anything by not having the "real thing"?

Thanks! :)

Re: Duncan Designed vs Duncan

My first time on this forum, but what the hey!!! Gotta come out of the shell sometime.

I just built a "Jackson" out of basically spare parts and a nice Mighty Mite neck, basically to relive the old daze and maybe get my hair to grow a little (haha). I wanted to do it on the cheap, so I picked up a set of HB-103's on E-bay. I am a pretty big Duncan kind of guy, and was a little skeptical about these Korean jobs, but I wasn't going to go out and blow a couple hundred bucks on a guitar I wasn't sure was going to play worth my effort little own the cash.

But I dropped them in and was VERY impressed!!! The HB-103's are the cheap versions of the Duncan Distortions, and although I am not really into the all out whaling anymore, these PUP's can ROCK you and they clean up fairly nice. By the way the guitar plays amazing!!!

I think the Duncan Designs are a great value!!! Am I going to run out and replace my Seymour Duncans with DD's??? The day Mr. Duncan gives me a nice salary to design Pick-Ups and play around with guitars all day (even in Korea)...then I MIGHT think about it!!!

Re: Duncan Designed vs Duncan

WELCOME TO THE FORUM FELLOWS!!!!!!

I have not really tried any Duncan designed so, I cant really compare them to standard duncans. I am sure they are decent at least.

Re: Duncan Designed vs Duncan

I have a set of DD's in my Samick Cobra and, man that thing gets a great Black Sabbath tone. Those pickups are better than most stock pickups and I have no intention on replacing them. Plus, the chrome covers look great!

Re: Duncan Designed vs Duncan

Here's a fun exercise that we like to do sometimes with factory visitors... We take stock Duncan Designed pickups and then some USA-made after-market pickups from some of the bigger (non-Seymour Duncan) manufacturers. Then, we compare them side-by-side.

We look at the polycarbonate material for the bobbins, the nickel silver bottom plate, the nickel plated screws and studs, the magnet wire, the cable, the overall "feel" of the pickup...

And then we sound test them side-by-side.

I agree with you, mod13, they really are a great value.

Welcome to forum, guys. I look forward to reading your posts in the future.

Re: Duncan Designed vs Duncan

I have a set of Duncan Designed HB-103's (Distortion set) stock in my Schecter. I must say WOW, they blew away all other stock pickups of the same price range when I first tried it out in the store. Value: A++++++

Having said that, I don't have a Duncan Distortion set, so I can't compare it to that (while I liked the stock pickups, I don't use the balls-to-the-wall output of the Distortions too much, and didn't overly like the clean, so I decided not to spend money on another set).

Re: Duncan Designed vs Duncan

not gonna help you but thank you for answering my question about what pickups were in those samicks
