Which one would be your choice for bridge of SG, and why ? I am pairing it with a PG neck which sounds great in this guitar. Thanks!

Re: Duncan Distortion or Custom for bridge of SG

Tough one...
As I see it, both have similar applications.
The Distortion is thicker and as such, may be better suited than the Custom in a 'dead' guitar. It'd make it more alive.
If the guitar is great already, the Custom may simply keep a little subtelty and 'vintage' vibe compared to the Distortion.

To my ears though, the Distortion is very musical and not even that much more modern than the Custom.
If you need this little more power, the Distortion is for you.
Otherwise the Custom maybe has a little more character but is a wee bit thinner.
They're hard to compare without having a proper sound in mind.

Same here!!!what i wanted to add is that the distortion can be really aggressive ,the custom is more tamed and not so "rude" sometimes. And i have to say that the distortions clears better with the knobs and is really great for soloing too.I love itt.

Re: Duncan Distortion or Custom for bridge of SG

I'm going to go with the Custom because the SG's build is kind of mid-humpy and the Custom has low end whoomp and top end cut to it which should help balance out the SG's tone. But I've never tried either in an SG (mine had 490's--blech, and currently has Bill Lawrence 500XL / 500R).

custom will add the bottom end that bridge pickups in sg's kinda lose.

+1 also, NOTHING matches the Pearly gates neck as well as a custom!

Re: Duncan Distortion or Custom for bridge of SG

I have an Epi G400 SG-lookalike with a Custom-b/59-n set. I really like the Custom a lot in that guitar due to the same comments made by chill and fakiekid. It's got just enough high's in it to cut through the bass....tonewise, it seems to fit nicely with the thickness of the slab of wood used for that guitar.
I think the Custom sounds great in a Les Paul, too.

Re: Duncan Distortion or Custom for bridge of SG

I've gotten away from using Distortion type pickups. I just prefer the tones and dynamics of most medium output pickups.

I have a Custom in one of my guitars and I think it sounds fat, mean and aggresive. It's great for high gain metal, but also sounds great for music that doesn't need such huge amounts of gain. That's important to me because a lot of what I play has some dirt but not over the top distortion. The Custom is a great match in tone and output with the 59 neck pickup in that guitar.

With your PG neck pickup, either pickup will work. I just think the Custom has a little more character, and would offer you more tonal veratility.

I voted for the Custom because it sounds so awesome in two of my Strats.

Great "vintage" tone and powerful enough for more modern tones too.

I love the Custom. Anyone that has seen other posts of mine will attest to that. It'll kick in your teeth and then kiss you better when it's done.

I don't know :laugh2:

I like both pickups but have not used them in an SG.

The Custom is a little less specialized - more versatile. It has a great growl too :13:

The DD is more compressed - not as articulate as the Custom. It has a great complexity when under distortion though - very thick with unique personality from that big ol magnet.
