Duncan Distortion Sounds Muffled

I've had a Jackson Pro King V for about a year now which came stock with Duncan Distortions. I was playing around last night switching between guitars and when I got to that one it sounded muffled and soft on the low strings, almost like the volume knob wasn't turned up. It is one of my quieter guitars and I'm used to tweaking to get more umph and tightness out of it (playing through an 800) but not like this. Is it the pots? Wiring? Any input appreciated. Thanks

Re: Duncan Distortion Sounds Muffled

If it's just all of a sudden happened, I'd check the jack first. If the hot wire or ground is only hanging on by a few strands, that could cause it.

Hate to say it, now you have to work your way back to the pickup leads and check for cold solder joints.

If a Jackson with a Distortion set is one of your quieter guitars, it may have had something wrong with it since day 1...

This is my thought, too. First thing to check is that both coils are working. Then wire each pickup (one at a time) directly to the jack. This can help isolate the problem and hear the true sound of each pickup. If that still doesn't work, come back and most pics of what you have.

What am I looking/listening for when I have them wired directly to the jack?

Re: Duncan Distortion Sounds Muffled

You are looking for a very clear, very loud sound. Not muffled at all. This will eliminate the pickups as a problem.

I see. Hopefully I have time to look at that tonight. If it is still muffled were do I go from there?

Re: Duncan Distortion Sounds Muffled

Then something may be wrong with the pickup. Pickup > jack is the 'purest' path since there's no pots or anything else to get in the way.

If you have a multimeter let us know what the pickup reads as well. And remember...visual inspection can only go so far. If you don't know what a cold solder joint looks like you won't think that anything is wrong.

Re: Duncan Distortion Sounds Muffled

I think I've narrowed it down the the volume pot. Ill try swapping that one out. It sounded clear throughout just the jack. Pickup was reading about 18k.

Re: Duncan Distortion Sounds Muffled

at least pots are relatively inexpensive. glad the pup seems to be working!

Re: Duncan Distortion Sounds Muffled

Can you see the value on the pots that are in it? They aren't 250k pots are they?
