Duncan Distortion - Super Distortion blend

Is there a pickup like this?

TONE Wanted : blend of Duncan Distortion ("DD") and Dimarzio Super Distortion ("SD"). The Duncan Distortion is great and articulate for rhythm and cuts through well with the upper midrange and highs. But it is too revealing of mistakes on leads and not fluid. The SD is great for leads, fluid and singing and hides mistakes. But the SD is a bit muddy on rhythm. I would like the best of both in one pickup, with a bias towards leads. I like 80's metal but George Lynch is a bit thin. Stryper is good.

Re: Duncan Distortion - Super Distortion blend

You could try a Kent Armstrong M215. It is a lot like both pickups and the epoxy potted version is very resonant and crisp while still having that Super Distortion warmth.

That sounds about right. I created a hybrid of the DD/SD on each baseplate. The hybrid on the DD baseplate and mag is a better than the other but too midrangey

For stryper, definitely try a PATB-2 Distortion. It definitely has a Stryper vibe to it. (Also, I believe they use it)

I have been using a Duncan Distortion TB-6 and it is great for rhythm but lacking in the leads, is the PATB-2 different?

so if I want smoother leads should I go with SH-6 or PATB-2 instead of my present TB-6?

I would say you will likely find no difference between the SH-6 and TB-6. They are a differently spaced version of the same thing. The PATB-II Distortion is a different animal.

OK, I ordered a Kent Armstrong M215 and will try the PATB-2 if that does not do it. Thanks

im assuming the super distortion has a brass base plate?

Re: Duncan Distortion - Super Distortion blend

The Duncan Distortion was my fav bridge pickup until i tried out the PATB-2...

Good to know. I made extensive listening tests with the DD, a modded 500T and a very old Dual Sound (the 4con version of the Super Distortion). I found the DD to have the best combo of attack and boldness. The SD was the warmest/middiest, the modded 500T (one side mag was swapped with a wood spacer) next and than the DD. The original 500T was way to bright.
So i might look for a PATB-2 ...

Re: Duncan Distortion - Super Distortion blend

From the Duncan Blog: If this is true it sounds like what I want so I am ordering a PATB-2:

"Compared to the Distortion, the PATB-2 has less cut and has less ‘sizzle.’ It’s a bit rounder and more airy with a good amount of fluidity. It’s almost like the PATB-2 is the offspring of a love triangle between the SH6 Distortion, SH4 JB and the PATB1!"

Re: Duncan Distortion - Super Distortion blend

did not receive it yet so dont know.... The UPS shipment notice said "A transportation accident has delayed delivery. / Delivery will be rescheduled". Maybe the truck crashed.
