Duncan Distortion

BloodRose

Professional Scapegoat
Ive never used a Duncan Distortion. Always been tempted. I found a good price on a Green one and think it would look cool in my black Kramer 1000.
(viva hair metal!!)
What kind of sound (tone) can I expect? Bright? chunk? I dont want bright or shrill. Can anyone compare it to something Im familiar with?
I use :
JB
C5
59
Custom
I have a Custom 8 in a similar guitar and LOVE IT!!
thanks

Re: Duncan Distortion

It reminds me of a alot tighter and higher output JB with a bit more treble.

Re: Duncan Distortion

I think it's way meatier sounding than the JB. If you like Duncan's other high output stuff, I'd be really surprised if you didn't like it.

If it turns out that you don't like it, I've been wanting a green one forever.

Re: Duncan Distortion

I'm with the tight bass, bright high end crowd. I would not say that it lacks bass, but it's definitely not super-bassy either. Also, while bright, I wouldn't call it shrill either. IMO it's a great all around high output pup.

We'll try it and see. If is isnt shrill, Im good. I have a dimarzio PAF in it now. At first I loved it as Ive never used a low output pickup in the bridge before. But Im so used to JB, C5, Custom, Custom 8, custom 4, BBQ that everytime I play it, Im looking for more sustain and scream. Especially because the guitar is designed for nothing but lead with only the slant bucker...

If Im not happy, Ill shoot you a pm and we'll talk..

Is I similar to a Super Distortion?? I have those in my Frehley

Re: Duncan Distortion

I just installed a Mayhem set in a friends Schecter Omen 6 today. I've been playing with it all afternoon. The Distortions just seem like the quintessential rock-'n-roll pickup. Great punch and output, but not muddy or overbearing in any one area. You just want to jam on some power chords, but also do some blues riffs too.

Great pups.

Re: Duncan Distortion

Man The DD is one of trhe best ever ,really nice harmonics ,I love it over Custom and the JB !It has really lots of high midds and lows.It is bright but not annoying. The harmonics are more wild ,and the riffing is lot's of fun.Try it out man.You won't regret it!

Re: Duncan Distortion

Here's a clip comparing directly the JB and the DD in the bridge position. JB is on the right, DD on the left. BTW, the JB is running thru 250K pots. I think the DD is a little brighter than the JB (but far from shrill) with a bit more output. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=520434&songID=4019501

Overall, I like the DD. My only issue with it is a slight fizz/grind up top (I like a clearer tone for leads). The DD seems better suited to rhythms and the JB for leads.

Nice clip! Yeah I definitely like the JB more (on this clip), but it's based on my (preference) and the music I tend to play (variety). I don't like pickups that sound like they have natural built-in distortion. I'm a tad biased because it was my "first love" SD brige pickup.

Just to be clear, the Distortion pickup does not have "distortion" built-in. It just does grunge real well. It can be as clean as you desire. Check out this clip I made several years ago using the Distortion neck.

:laugh2:

Some jackass at a local music shop tried to tell me that the stock Duncan in a Charvel Journeyman had "built-in distortion". I asked if he meant that it was a Duncan Distortion, and he said no, built-in distortion. (It's actually a JB).

To clear things up a little more, it's the AMP that distorts, not the pickup.

Wild harmonics? Man that gives me flashbacks of when I got my explorer and had the 500T in it!!
What a screamer!
