Duncan needs one more pickup

IMO, there is a gap in the Duncan bucker pickups. Several "vintage" spec. in the 7-8k range......several in the "hot" 14-16k range. Only the Demon at 10, but it has a "9" eq number for highs, then the Blues Scaraceno at 9+, but it's only in trembucker. I think Duncan needs a nice 10-12k bucker with slightly rolled off highs, like maybe 7 or 8 on his EQ numbers. So maybe a 6/5/8 or something of that sort. What do you guys think??

Re: Duncan needs one more pickup

That sounds like a good idea. I'm still waiting for the Custom/JB hybrid.

Yes, I've noticed this too. I'm happy with the vintage output now, but in the past I have been looking for something 10-12k. The Customs are a tad too hot for my regular style.

Re: Duncan needs one more pickup

Between 10 and 12 like Simon F said. There was a thread about "what would you like to see SD make" about 6 months or so ago and it seemed like 75% of the folks wanted this also. I wonder what the hold up is? I want them to make more blade buckers also. The 10-12K bucker would be a grand idea!! something between a CC and a APH would sound great in my book.

Theodie and I have talked about this several times...I feel that we need several more pups in the 10-12k range...as well as a few more "hot" Alnico II pups...all the Alnico II buckers are more vintage voiced, except the CC...I would love a set of alnico II bucker with about an 8k neck and a 10k bridge...that would be might fine in my book!

Yeah, they should make something like Slash's signature models for cheaper than you can order them from the custom shop. He has Alnico II's but hotter, which is obvious from listening to his tone.

According to Evan...Slash uses Alnico II pro's off the shelf just like you can get anywhere...he also has some CS pups...but they are not overwound...

Re: Duncan needs one more pickup

I understand the same about Slash's pickups. Off the shelf. Guess I missed the previous "10-12k" posts. Sorry if this is a re-hash. Just been thinking about it lately. A set of Alnico II's in that range would be killer I think.

Re: Duncan needs one more pickup

one more??? SD needs like 10 more pickups...since when can you have too many choices for tone??? but i agree with the rails comment...we need another rail pickup...think full size hum version of the tele hotrails...perfect IMO...i may actually order one of those from the custom shop for a strat!

A hotter strat alnico II would be nice too. Production line and not Ants

Re: Duncan needs one more pickup

A Custom 5/JB hybrid!!! Just imagine, the bass, clarity and vintage crunch of the C5 paired with the fat and singing JB lead sound!

Then whats the difference with the Custom Shop Slash models? I always thought that the custom shop slash models were Scatter wound and wound to about 10-12k?

If slash doesnt use the custom shop "slash" models, people shouldnt refer to them as slash models :laugh2:

Whats the deal?

Re: Duncan needs one more pickup

I agree. I think Duncan loses business to other companies due to the lack of medium output pickups. The Blues Trembucker is one of the best pickups I've ever heard, but it tends to be overlooked because of the unique look and the fact that it's only available in trembucker spacing. Making that pickup in a standard spaced, standard polepiece version would be a good start. So would making the custom shop EVH model available off-the-shelf. Of course, it would have to be renamed to avoid a lawsuit, but that would give people two more choices in the medium output range: one alnico 5, one alnico 2. I'm glad to see Duncan will soon be releasing a new noiseless Strat pickup as well. That was another area where I thought they could use another model, and based on Lew's review, they are excellent pickups.

Re: Duncan needs one more pickup

I would like a Alnico II single coil with 1/4 flat rod magnets with a brass baseplate and highly overwound 15k or more. Just a fat, smooth, dark and meaty sigle coil. A shield around the coil would be nice too! No clank and no icepick treble.

The hold up is that its not very easy to add a product to your portfolio, no matter what kind of business you're in. You have market research, development, funding, managing the whole project, testing, advertising/marketing plans etc., TONS of stuff to do. Lots of folks here say they'd want something like this, but we only represent a segment of SD's customer base and market. I'm sure Evan and company have heard us, but these things take awhile. The question always, is this the right thing to do for our business? Will it not only make money but increase SD's share of the market and help them retain customers? Lots of questions to be asked before developing and launching a new product. I agree though, I'd like to see a more med output pup as well in the portfolio.

Re: Duncan needs one more pickup

I think most pickups are designed with the idea that the original single coil and humbuckers were close to perfect and that they only need tweaking. Pickup companies tend to be pretty conservative. Even the more radical departures still will make reference to some sonic holly grail in their product literature. I like iconoclasts!

I do realise that there are those different dynamics of the business world that you have mentioned but, If almost everybody and their mom on the prior post that I was reffering to wanted a pickup with those specs, I am sure it will make money, increase SD's share of the market, and help them retain customers!! If good number of folks on this forum said they wanted it, it must be a great idea considering that those same folks probally know quite a bit more about pickups than most players in my opinion. I am sure there is one that is "custom shop" right now but, it could possibly just become a standard production model. Gotta listen to your customers!!!! Like I said before,
Whats the holdup?

Re: Duncan needs one more pickup

The Custom/59 Hybrid hits the nail right on the head at right around 11.25k... it's vintage with balls... the perfect pickup!
And yes... the Custom/JB Hybrid GUITARIST mentioned is also killer if a hotter pickup is what you are after...

Re: Duncan needs one more pickup

When you guys talk about the Custom/'59 Hybrid, are you talking about using the Ceramic magnet from the Custom or the Alnico 5 Magnet from the '59?
