Duncan needs one more pickup

When you guys talk about the Custom/'59 Hybrid, are you talking about using the Ceramic magnet from the Custom or the Alnico 5 Magnet from the '59?

I guess they were talking about the Alnico 5. Before I tried my first 59/Custom hybrid (thanks to BachtoRock!), I was considering the Distortion/59 hybrid. Well knowing now that the only thing that separates a Distortion and a JB are the ceramic magnet I will have to try it and compare the differences between A5 and ceramic mags. Making hybrids are alot like exploring a new frontier. :D

Re: Duncan needs one more pickup

I also think they need a vintage/modern 10k-12k pickup that will compete with the Rio Grande BBQ. I know lots of people have jumped ship to use the Rio BBQ and I think Duncan should come up with a better version. One thing I notice about the BBQ is it is more sensitive to touch and volume/tone knob adjustment compared to the production Duncans I've played.

Also, remember that the resistance rating does not tell the whole story. My Gibson BB Pros feel as hot as some 12-15k pickups! The wire gauge and entire pickup circuit makes a difference.

Re: Duncan needs one more pickup

the bb pros use alnico v magnets vs the alnico II that the others use so it will seem hotter. try a pearly gates, sure seems hotter then its 8k resistance.
i would like to see a 10k production pup, i had a 10k antiqutiy with full strength magnet that is a killer pup that i think would be very popular, for the mean time youll have to cough up custom shop cash to get one

Re: Duncan needs one more pickup

I agree a 10-12k ohm A2 AND A5 version. I'm probably going to wind one of those on UGD. Maybe a CC/JB hybrid...but which magnet.

A hot A2 pup for strat is another thing. I would love to have a 10-12k strat pup with an A2 mag that is NOT an antiquity.

IMO, there is a gap in the Duncan bucker pickups. Several "vintage" spec. in the 7-8k range......several in the "hot" 14-16k range. Only the Demon at 10, but it has a "9" eq number for highs, then the Blues Scaraceno at 9+, but it's only in trembucker. I think Duncan needs a nice 10-12k bucker with slightly rolled off highs, like maybe 7 or 8 on his EQ numbers. So maybe a 6/5/8 or something of that sort. What do you guys think??

You just described a Rio Grande BBQ.

Re: Duncan needs one more pickup

Yep, I have a BBQ in my LP DC that I love! But, I really like Duncans and would like to see them come out with something that compares to the BBQ. Basically the reason behind my post.

Re: Duncan needs one more pickup

I'm going to try this CC/59 hybrid but I am thinking more Alnico 3. It has all the vintage shimmer of Alnico 2 but with more low-mid woof. I put one in my Custom Custom and it's a definite improvement.

Re: Duncan needs one more pickup

You already saied what i thought.
I'm still looking for something hotter than the '59, but it#s not a custom which has too much, and not a Screamin Demon, which is too bright and has less bite.
Some suggest to change the pole pieces, but now i'm gonna sell the SH-12, and i don't want to change the SH-12 and then i can't sell it.
What i found out, is that the Sh-12 can't be an overwound SH-1, because it seems not to be same wire! Optical the SH-12 seems to be more UNDER wound than the SH-1! So my opinion is, that the SH-12 is an underwound Custom-5!
Maybe the Trembucker Blues might be an opinion.
Actually i'm gonna sell a lot of stuff (i have too much) and will stay with the SH-1 (still like to have it hotter), SH-3, SH-4, SH-5 for 2-4 guitars.

Where do yo get Alnico 3 magnets. I though Duncan only used 2 and 5.

You are right -- Duncan uses only 2 and 5, at least as far as I know anyway. But you can get every imaginable kind of magnet at www.allstarmagnetics.com.

Their minimum order is $25.00 (last I checked) but on the bright side, the magnets are only $2.00 a pop so you get 13 magnets. I recommend evenly dividing your order between both Alnico 4 and Alnico 3 magnets so you can try both and see which you like better.

I'm partial to the A3 for vintage tone with just a little extra beef. Lindy Fralin told me he prefers and uses only A4 in his humbuckers, though he keeps A5's on hand in case a customer sends one back and wants more output.

The Alnico 4 is even a little fuller and thicker than 3, but not as loud and with less upper-mid grind than an Alnico 5.

At least that's how my ears hear it...

Re: Duncan needs one more pickup

I found Alnico 4 to be fuller than Alnico 5, yet harsher. So harsh, that I quickly ripped them out of my pickups after trying them (CC and PGn).

Theodie and I have talked about this several times...I feel that we need several more pups in the 10-12k range...as well as a few more "hot" Alnico II pups...all the Alnico II buckers are more vintage voiced, except the CC...I would love a set of alnico II bucker with about an 8k neck and a 10k bridge...that would be might fine in my book!
I have always thought that. Something Slash-ish. I never use Alnico II's because they are too weak sounding in the Duncan line.
