Duncan SSL- Early Grave?

I purchased an SSL-2 (new) the other day on ebay. When inspecting the pickup, I noticed that the coil had slight damage. It appears that something has gouged the winding slightly (not consistent with shipping damage.)
The winding has been skewed slightly and there is some wax around the problem area. From close inspection the wires seem to be unbroken.

I won’t have access to a multi-meter or guitar tech until Monday, and thus I won’t be able to tell if I have a damaged pickup. Tell me guys, what are my chances of having a fully functional SSL...

No telling...keep your fingers crossed. I'll take a guess and say: I predict it'll work. Let us know. Lew

Lew, when you say ‘work’ do you mean that there is a chance that it will be fully functional. If only you stocked some SSL-2s rather than that set of APS-2s… ;)

Re: Duncan SSL- Early Grave?

if the wires dont look broken, there may be hope

The wires are more skewed than anything. Slightly clumped one might say. Is there any kind of insulation on the wire that can be damaged?

Jeremy, this hope you speak of… is there a chance that the pickup will function normally? Likely symptoms: loss of output? Microphonics?

either it works, or it don't work ;)

actually, I'd guess a simple meter test would tell

Hmm, that’s interesting. I thought that the pickup might work; yet the sound or output may have been degraded to some degree.

Re: Duncan SSL- Early Grave?

I'm no expert, but I'd say you either have continuity, or you don't - not something in between

Re: Duncan SSL- Early Grave?

yup. pretty much its gonna work or it isnt.

this hope i speak of comes in the form of the fact that you cant see any break in the wires. wire can move and might be microphonic at higher volumes (squealing really obnoxiously) but it has to break for the pup to stop working. ive even had luck with putting copper tape around the coil for a dead pup and bringing it to life.

so when it comes time monday when you can get to a meter, bring the rabbits foot, the little tiki god, the 4 leaf clover, wear your lucky (under?)pants, and pray. then its up to the meter.

at least you can say ya tried if it doesnt work

Re: Duncan SSL- Early Grave?

Will do, though I don’t have any lucky underpants. Can I have yours?

Edit: so if the skewed wiring creates microphonic noise, is there anything that I can do to remedy the problem?

There are no varying degrees of "Work".. wither it does or it doesnt.. hook it up to a multimeter or put it in a guitar and find out ;)

Re: Duncan SSL- Early Grave?

Well, I managed to get my guitar back from the tech today…and I can say with great glee that the SSL functions normally! It must have been the magic underpants…

Time to annoy the neighbours,
Samuel.
