i've played mostly ibanez guitars for most of my guitar playing life and i've always associated DiMarzios with ibanez guitars. i think maybe because alot of the ibbys have basswood bodies i figured dimarzios went best with basswood bodies. are there any ibby players reading this that have duncans in there guitars. if so which ones sound best(Duncan Distortrion, JB)?

Re: Duncans in Basswood body?

I've only tried one set of Duncans in a basswood guitar -- my seven-string RG7621. The Jazz-7 in the neck is fantastic. It's articulate and balanced to a fault, with a hi-fi sort of sound that's neither warm and romantic nor shrill and hard. The JB-7 in the bridge is strange. I like it, but it doesn't sound like a JB in any other guitar I've played. It's spongy, sweet, and strangely musical. I went through a lot to get that guitar where it is, so I'm not changing anything on it anytime soon, but I do often wonder what a change of a bridge pickup or a magnet might do for it. An A8, a Custom, a Screamin' Demon, an A2, etc.

Pretty much the main-production Duncans are fine depending on the sound you're looking for. Please provide the following info so we can help you to the best of our ability:

i like a shred lead tone (paul gilbert, steve vai, greg howe) and a modern metal tone for riffs (killswitch engage, shadows fall)
so i guess a good all around shred metal tone. i'd like a little more detail and less fizz.

right now i have a dimarzio di activator in the bridge and a dimarzio air norton in the neck

I have a 59/Jazz in the neck of my old Roadstar and it's very nice. Used a regular Jazz in there too - very clean, precise pu. The 59/Jazz has a tad more warmth and harmonic complexity.

Re: Duncans in Basswood body?

For the guys you mentioned I would recommend a Duncan Distortion in the bridge and a Full Shred or Screamin Demon in the neck. I would say a JB in the bridge might work but some people find the bottom end a lil loose then they would like but you might like it.

Re: Duncans in Basswood body?

I used to have an 80's Ibanez Roadstar...single bucker deal with a Lo Pro edge.

Basswood body and I had a Duncan Distortion in it...single volume control and it had a push/pull split wired up.

Great sounding guitar...even though it's not my type of guitar these days I wish I'd kept it!!!

TGWIF: RG410, slanted hb a la Eddie? They're great guitars; didn't know you were a closet superstrat fan ;).

Custom for sure in the bridge! Sounds amazing in my RG470. Pearly Gates neck in the neck is fantastic too. Screamin' Demon if you want a medium output bridge or a sweet neck pickup.

This is basswood.

It's loaded with a '59 Trembucker and sounds great.
