Cheap and easy cotton balls, pack 'em down and pop in the ears. :laugh2:

I never used to wear ear protection until my band had one really loud, really long practice. I had ringing in my left ear for close to 3 days after that practice and distorted hearing for almost 2 weeks. Ever since that day, my left ear (which happened to be rather close to the drummer's Crash cymbol) will ring at high volumes quicker than my right ear.

Moral of the story - definately wear some type of ear protection. I'll never play without it anymore.

Re: ear protection

yeah, i had a similar thing happen to me, only it happened at a concert i was at. i was too close to the PA speakers the entire show, and couldnt hear out of my left ear for a couple days, and for about a year any time i would hear something high pitched, my ear would ring terribly. and i've been jamming with some guys lately and we've been cranking our amps, so i needed some type of protection.

Re: ear protection

I have to use ear protection. Once I start losing frequencies, I might as well learn to say, "Would you like fries with that?" cause I'm done in the music industry.

Ear protection is not an option for me. I use Westones. Custom made. With 15dB filters.

I just had my hearing tested last month. It's still perfect.

If you're not using ear protection and you're going to loud concerts, you're damaging your ears.

Re: ear protection

THE GOOD :I wear Musicians earplugs . You can do a Yahoo search on this to find out more.
"Musicians Earplugs from Etymotic" I have the 25 dB atttenuation filters. They make it so that you can play without any discomfort from the loud amplified music. They are , without a doubt, worth at least 10 times what I paid for them ($170). Actually they are priceless. You can lpay for longer times and hear all the music much better. Everything sounds better but just less volume

THE BAD: Here is where I get preachy on you. Your sig says you're 19 yrs old. Hopefully your parents pester you to protect your hearing. If you have hearing that is fine you want it to stay that way. I glad to read that you are using Hearo's from GC. Do all that you can to protect your hearing from an early age.

Re: ear protection

....
Custom molded/fitted earplugs are the way to go. currently available in 9dB, 15dB and 25 dB attenuation.

I have slight tinitus "ringing in the ear" that will never go away. This was caused by loud amplified music at concerts and playing guitar in rock/metal bands since about 1985. When I started out playing Metallica was new, Megadeth was new, Van Halen was in their prime, Motley Crue was rocking, Aerosmith was making a comeback.

Luckily they are all still playing music. However 3/4 of metallica uses custom ear protection due to hearing loss.

And I know for a fact that Joey and Brad from Aerosmith have substantial hearing problems due to loud music. You didn't hear that from me and I didn't hear that while visiting one of the doctors offices that they visit in Brookline, MA

My point being: you cannot have a lifestyle based on cranking high volumes without properly caring for ears or you will suffer damage. Think of it this way, would you expose yourself to wailing police sirens 10 feet away from your head for 3 hours 3 times per week? So would you do the same with a Mesa Dual Rectifier or Marshall Stack?

If you look around your gonna see Pat Benetar advertising hearing aids in the press really soon. This is not a joke!

Yep. I usually use cotton balls. Didn't have Hearos back in the old days, so I guess I just got used to using cotton over the years. ....:)

Re: ear protection

I use earplugs 100% of the time. I don't care what brand they are, as long as they're in before things get LOUD!!

Re: ear protection

The best ear protection you can have is your volume knob. TURN IT DOWN!!! That being said and if that is simply not possible spend as much money as necessary to protect your ears!!!

Re: ear protection

For those who use cotton balls for protection. I read that they don't really provide much protection.

3 Cent Hero. - Can you hear me now? That's the sound of me jammin' a pencil in your ear ;-) "what's ear protection?" HA

Seriously though, it is very important that we protect ourselves for ever. I'll look like a real jerk if I'm always asking "Huh, what'dya say?"

deeply inserted foam earplugs (~ $5.00 for 25 pair) can provide a littel more than 30 dB noise attenuation, which is plenty. However the high freq are almost gone , Custom fitted ones provide either 9dB, 15 dB or 25 dB with almost no frequency loss.

Re: ear protection

Hear's a link to a sound decibel , volume chart http://www.gcaudio.com/resources/howtos/loudness.html
"The incidence of hearing loss in classical musicians has been estimated at 4-43%, in rock musicians 13-30%." I bet the rock musicians percentage is higher due to embarassment or shame

Here's a link to the loudest band in the world ( they should have the sh*t kicked out of them for playing that loud to an audience.

http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/4388/manowar1.htm 129 Decibels in 1994.
I suspect that this entire band will have significant hearing loss.

That's correct, they only provide a few decibels of attenuation at most. If you're using cotton balls, you're fooling yourself into a false sense of security.

damn yo, that shit would hurt :saeek:

i don't even use ear protection when i'm using woodworking or metalworking power tools. prolly should start eh? lol. i've never really thought about protecting my ears. ain't i s-m-r-t :smack:

Re: ear protection

I second Evan's recommandation for Westone. Custom fit and they're marverlous!

I have screwed up my ears too, trust me guys it sucks!

Re: ear protection

I really need to do this - if I lose my hearing, I will never forgive myself - my passion, gone... and for such a pathetic reason. Thanks for the reminder. (As if the ringing isn't enough!!) :P

Then I've been in a false sense of security for years. Thanks for telling me now, Ryan LOL !!!! Seriously though, the thing I find most annoying to my ears are the cymbals, which I stay as far away from as possible. I'm usually spread pretty far from the Drummer, and over the years, as sound systems and monitors have gotten better, I've found that the overall stage volume has followed suit. Also, I learned early on that sound QUALITY is much more important than sound QUANTITY. I do agree with you that today's ear protection is MUCH better, I wish we would have had it all along. I highly recommend that the younger players out there take full advantage of today's technology in protecting your hearing !!! I also agree that the volume knobs need to come DOWN LOL !!! Now, what were you saying, ...eh???? LOL !!!! ...........:)

Re: ear protection

I bought myself some chemist earplugs, plastic rubber ones which fit really well inside my ears and definitely provide a decent amount of protection but im pretty sure the frequencies i hear are pretty different.

I remember one rehearsal i forgot my earplugs and the drummer stuffed my hearing up for a few days and i still think to this day ive got slightly worse hearing in my right ear...and yes every now and then i have trouble hearing people, and it sucks.

Although its not bad yet, its still not the best anymore and for the past year or so ive been finding myself saying "excuse me, say that again" lots and lots more than i used to.

I really notice it when i go to clubs and live shows these days more than i used to that my ears start ringing much easier and keep ringing for a while. After some live shows my hearing seriously stuffs up for a while after it.

Ive really gotta take my earplugs to every loud thing i go to, but taking them to clubs when you're trying to impress girls isnt the coolest thing in the world. Its a stupid excuse for someone whos ears are important as they are to us, but come on, it aint cool in a club. Its just that cos i might have damaged my ears a little already club levels start to annoy them.

That turned out a lot longer than i thought it would ;)

Re: ear protection

What about these custom earplugs? They sound expensive, whats so good about them? Do they let you actually hear properly whats going on without it being as loud as it is without them.
