Early Christmas Present for me....

The wife decided she was gonna stop in GC yesterday to pick up a gift card for my younger nephew whose name i drew to buy a Christmas present for. So a little later when i get home from work, she's wavin this small wrapped Christmas gift at me, so i tell her to put it under the tree. A little later still, she can't hold it in anymore so she has me open it. The first thing was a $50 GC gift card, which i could put to REALLY good use. And the main thing was a set of DR Black Beauties coated guitar strings. These things look really cool, cost about $10 a pack and each string is actually BLACK. According to the wife, she told the salesman at GC about me just buying my new MIM Tele there, and that i played lots of country and whatnot, and apparently these are what they recommended to her.

Think I might slap these suckers on in a little while and see what they're all about. If i don't like em, its back to my good 'ol Ernie Ball Slinkys....

But what i wanna know is this.... anyone ever tried these things before? Do they have a different sound at all or is the whole black thing just for protection and longevity? And... did you think they were worth $10??

Thanks bros.

Re: Early Christmas Present for me....

I used wrapped strings on my fretless basses for awhile. I liked the reduction in friction noise from fingers and I felt they gave the whole sound a little less percussiveness. Since I was playing non-slap that was a good thing!

I'd be interested to hear how they act on a guitar.

Re: Early Christmas Present for me....

10$ isn't about standard fee for a set of strings? I admit I'm more experienced in the acoustic steel department but the cheaper brands go for 12...

Yeah now that i think about it, that is about the going rate i guess. What i was thinking of was the $3.79 that i normally get them for online at MusiciansFriend. My mistake.

I just got through putting these things on.... and although i haven't plugged into my amp yet, after the first tuning, they did seem to sound a little more vibrant and even a little louder than the usually pure nickel strings that i'm used to. I'll give these things a little while to stretch out and get comfortable before i plug 'er up and then i'll tell you guys what they're really like.

I wanted to let everyone know....I'm pretty sure these are STEEL strings that i got. I think they just have a really really thin layer of black coating on them to help them last longer. Skaterough sounded like he thought i meant the wrapped black strings (nylon tapewound?) that you get for basses. I don't know if these are the same type or not. Hmmm....

Re: Early Christmas Present for me....

Ok, I got those black strings on and did some playing on my MIM Tele earlier. The biggest difference i could tell was that these strings didn't have that clangy metal sound about them when you first play on brand new strings. And second and more important, these things are really warm sounding! I find that a big plus with these MIM Teles as they're really bright guitars to me. These strings warmed it up quite nicely. Now i'm debating whether to get another set to put on my older MIM Tele when those strings get old.....

But i think i do like them quite a bit.

Yeah i'm thinkin these things will turn some heads whenever i play around other people... meaning my family. None of them have heard of black strings before lol

Should be funny :)

I saw these about six months ago, a local store had a set of blacks on a MIA Dean. Looked pretty cool and definitely different. They come in about half a dozen colors.
