Early Ed Van Halen info

Guys -- Forgot to post this here -- non-regular readers of my blog may not have seen it.

Email exchange with a guy who grew up with Ed with some details about Ed's early sound. No "holy grail" info here, just more info to throw into the pot:

More recollections about Ed in the VH1 days and (mostly) Kramer/1984 days (btw, he preferred SD '59s back then, as you will read):

Hope you fellow Ed-heads enjoy. Moderators, sorry if this is the wrong forum but there isn't one that covers the whole signal chain.

Re: Early Ed Van Halen info

... Thanks dude. :friday: Some of that amp "info" was sort of -> :welcome: rehash though... and EVH a "better singer" than Roth? "How Many Say I"? Huh? :banghead:

... Stormer... wonder if he was talking about my old bro from Hanich (R.I.P.) Music, Stephan Williams? Stephan was a monster player... he was known to break Strat tremolo arms like they were Popsicle sticks - the guy even had Charvel/Jackson machine one out of titanium for him... and he still broke it. Tim Gaines (Stryper) was also in Stormer... and also a Hanich employee with Stephan.

... Chris Holmes... very good player...unintentionally spilled his beer on me at an after-party for Armored Saint ... think 'twas in '82? W.A.S.P. were the first Goth Metal band ever. Never saw 'em past '83 ... but their earlier club shows were pretty theatrical... onstage they had (controlled) propane fires, nudie wimmenz, fake "gore", etc. ...

So does that mean Ed's Kramer 5150 and Kramer 1984 had SD 59's in them?? I thought the SD CC was supposed to get you his "5150" sound

Ed's guitar tone came mostly from his amp and his playing. As long as you have a fat pickup (doesn't have to be one specific pickup), you have his fingers, and you have the right amp, you could get the brown sound no problem.
