Earvana or Buzz Feiten?? in a band situation

hi, i am looking at two new guitars and each uses the buzz feiten or the earvana nut.

the guitars are washburn wi65pro and esp ltd hybrid 400.

anyway, i need to know whether a guitar equipped with either will cause problems in a band situation where the other players don't have any compensated tuning system in place?

also which nut will allow for easier downtuning on a regular basis?

Re: Earvana or Buzz Feiten?? in a band situation

I have a guitar that was "Buzz'd". I've played it with others in both a trio (guitar, drums, bass) and a "jam session" situation (several people with tons of competing volumes). I'd say that my being "more in tune" was not an issue on the overall sound except to my ears. The audience in either case didn't register anything different than having guitars without the tuning enhancements. In the jam session area, I'd say the overall volume coming off the stage probably masked any discrepancies in that regard.

Drop D: Well, on my Buzz Feiten modified guitar it seems that retuning doesn't affect how "in tune" it is, and retuning is just as easy as before (turn the key, match the note...nothing fancy). I even use open G occasionally with success, no tuning issues.

As long as the guitar is intonated and set-up correctly, you'll be fine with either the Earvana or the Buzz Feiten. Visually speaking, the Earvana is noticable and the Buzz Feiten isn't. Aurally you'll feel better while playing, you won't have that "why does my A chord sound terrible" thing going on.

should the fact that the other guitar player in the band uses an earvana nut mean i should edge towards getting the esp with the earvana equipped?

Re: Earvana or Buzz Feiten?? in a band situation

Not necessarily. I mean, the both do the same thing. The earvana was designed to make the modification easier by just replacing the existing nut and the Buzz Feiten mod involves a little wood cutting. If the two guitars you're deciding on both have the tuning mods, then just go with the one that feels/sounds best to you. The end result will be the same in regards to tuning.

hmm, i am totally torn. the washburn is £50 cheaper than the esp.

with the buzz feiten system i am to tune all the Es in if i want to use a standard tuner and standard tuning but what if i did play drop c, do i still tune in the Es?

i have no idea, also what about nut string slot width?

Re: Earvana or Buzz Feiten?? in a band situation

You're making it too hard on yourself. Play the guitars, pick the one you like. Yeah, you might have to use a special tuner for the Feiten one, I use the Korg G3 (I think that's the name) but I've also used regular tuners and had no problems. Don't sweat it.

Nut stings slot width: I didn't notice anything different on mine.

Re: Earvana or Buzz Feiten?? in a band situation

I am speaking with limited knowledge, but I THINK the Feiten system includes some tuning offsets in addition to the compensated nut. It is possible that you might need a tuner like the Peterson to take full advantage of the complete system.

It's like Sanford is saying, the compensated nut from either system will probably already give you all the correction you'll ever perceive.

Alternate tunings and changing string gauges can create intonation problems no matter what. Compensated nuts will not make it worse. Buy the guitar you like.

Either system will make you sound MORE in tune than any other guitar in your band. Buy the instrument that you want, dude. Play without fear!

Its ok playing without fear but i don't want my tuning to be noticeably different to the other guys in the band in a live situation.

I don't think you need to be concerned about this. The reports that I've gotten are that the guitar will sound "tighter" than others, but not different.
