Eastern Music

Does anyone know a good place/book/etc where I can get some scales, phrases, etc for easter type music? What type of scales have an eastern feel to them? I want to incorporate this into my playing and since my fretless guitar is underway I figured this would be the perfect thing to start playing this stuff on.

Thanks,
Eric

Re: Eastern Music

Hmm and hearing it will also help...but I guess that you have some stuff?!?
Listen to Jeff Becks Nadia by the way:)

My Derek Trucks CD has several of these songs. I just can't figure out where to start! lol.

I've listened to some of your fusion tracks and how do you play like that?! Seriously I've been trying to figure it out and I can't seem to get my head wrapped around that kind of music and its phrasing.

I don't know of any books, but I recommend listening to the Ragas or the Carnatic Music of India as a primer. Most of that type of stuff is played against a drone. So harmonically it's simple. You can probably piece together the scales that they're playing by listening. The phrasing and rhythmic cadences are key characteristics of the style. There lots of bends, slurs, glissandos and tremolo techniques as well.

If you're playing any fretless guitar you might want to look up David Fuzinski. He plays a mean fretless . . .
