Please, help me. I need to know what humbucker Eddie used in Fair Warning records and in the Fair Warning tour. I'm a Brazilian fan a 23 years. I'm not decision, because I read about custom custom; about sh-1 59'; about hibrid...
I want and need the exactly brown sound of Fair Warning Records and tour.
Somebody can help me? Written simple, please. Marco.

My email, is: eddievanhalen1000@yahoo.com.br
I have 5150 ll and Marshall Plexi super lead 100 59'.
So, I have the "Brown" ampli. So, I need the pickup!!!

Re: Eddie Van Halen EVH in Fair Warning. What's Humbucker? Help from Brazil!!!

In this Seymour Duncan Forum, I read about a man that work with Eddie in Fair Waring tour and said:
----"Eddie told me about the pickup. A HIBRID."
But I lost this forum.

Re: Eddie Van Halen EVH in Fair Warning. What's Humbucker? Help from Brazil!!!

The Custom Custom is probably the way to go. I don't think even Ed could tell you what pickups he used at any given time.

Here is the thread... and yes, it was backstage during the Fair Warning tour.

I have found that it is the best pickup for all early EVH... I think most of the variance in tone was the actual recording process and post production. The Custom Custom would suit the later stuff better. The EVH is also a great pickup.

I may be alone in my thinking but when I listen to Fair Warning all I can hear is Gibson. Mean Streets and Sinners Swing in particular sound like a mahogany body, short scale guitar not an ash/alder bodied strat with a Floyd. He probably used a mixture of stuff but a lot of the the rythem stuff sounds to dark and gritty to be his strat.

Re: Eddie Van Halen EVH in Fair Warning. What's Humbucker? Help from Brazil!!!

He could have been using the chainsawed Frankendestroyer on some of those songs....short scale, Korina body. I can never remember which song it is, but there is one specific tune on one of the first four records where he actually said that he used the Destroyer for the rythym parts and one of the Chravels for the solo.

Re: Eddie Van Halen EVH in Fair Warning. What's Humbucker? Help from Brazil!!!

He used the Ibanez "Shark" Destroyer for a fair amount of tunes on the first two VH record. He used a borrowed Destroyer for some tunes on Women And Children First.

The EVH/1978 Seymour Duncan pickup NAILS the Fair Warning tone. I had one and I was like...wow,TOO close.

*Tank you very much for you. All helps is wellcome. I found the thread
(BachToRock)
and is convincing so much. I'm will try to translate better for understand.
*About Gibson (jimlp), I think "Eddie" in all your life, maked and tried humbuckers, always based in Gibson's humbuckers. I think that must exist a Gibson that has the Brown sound.

Re: Eddie Van Halen EVH in Fair Warning. What's Humbucker? Help from Brazil!!!

The old Gibson pAF pickups varied so much from one pickup to another, that there's no correct pAF tone. There are bound to be some that give the "brown" sound and lots that don't. It would just be a matter of luck to find one that does. On the other hand the 78 is proven.

So how and why does the 78 differ from the pearly gates?

Re: Eddie Van Halen EVH in Fair Warning. What's Humbucker? Help from Brazil!!!

The Hybrid will get you pretty close, but it is SO much more than a pickup. You need Ed's touch and attack, you need his amps and effects (there is alot of harmonizer on Fair Warning) and you also need really great post-production and engineering!

The Destroyer was NOT Limba (or Korina) it was actually Japanese SEN which is an ASH very similar to our Northern Hard Ash. Ed's Frankenstrat was also ASH, not Maple.

You are searching for one of the most elusive and best tones that Ed ever laid down on tape. Fair Warning is a tough one....really. I can get a pretty damn good WCF, which is my favorite VH record, but Fair Warning has always been elusive...even with a Hybrid stuffed into a vintage HEAVY San Dimas Maple Charvel with a one piece quartersawn maple neck.

Good luck!

Mike

That is a great sound to go after. My favorite album of theirs. A little thicker than the earlier stuff, a little bassier. There is strong musicianship on that album. A little more mature than earlier VH stuff.

Ed was one who custom wound his own pickups.

Re: Eddie Van Halen EVH in Fair Warning. What's Humbucker? Help from Brazil!!!

don't forget there was an eq pedal in almost a reverse v curve going there too. seem in the early days he was pushing the mids in the front end and pulling them out on the amp. red the pick up came out of an old gibson. A paf?

Re: Eddie Van Halen EVH in Fair Warning. What's Humbucker? Help from Brazil!!!

For the same pickup to get you a particular guy's sound, you have to have the same pick and picking technique he has. Very often because your own playing technique is totally different from so-and-so's, you can get the same sound with totally different gear.

Re: Eddie Van Halen EVH in Fair Warning. What's Humbucker? Help from Brazil!!!

I am not sure that Ed used the MXR Six Band EQ on Fair Warning...he may have still been using it with the reverse smile curve.

I think the harmonizer was used quite a bit, sometimes just to thicken and not as a detuner. Some interesting stuff on Fair Warning, and Ed's best solo ever....Push Comes to Shove, of course. Played on a Strat...not Frankie or the Destroyer.

Re: Eddie Van Halen EVH in Fair Warning. What's Humbucker? Help from Brazil!!!

Fair Warning's my fave VH record. VH I is close, but there's WAYYYY too much reverb on VH I, in some places you can barely hear the note attack. My second favorite VH tone is on For Unlawful...why do the guitars sound so attrocious on 5150? Some of my favorite VHagar stuff but very difficult to listen to, much better on the Live W/O Annette video (that's a joke btw, an old Bobcat Goldthwait number about Annette Funicelli being Ed's first choice after Dave left.) Sorry, I digress. But I do that.

Fair Warning rules! It never leaves my car!!!! (My daughter calls Sunday Afternoon in the Park "the f4rt noise song." How else can you experience the inner workings of Ed's colon?)

Here is the guitar that gets the job done...
Early 80' Kramer Bookmatched Maple Pacer Imperial body
Warmoth Quatersawn Maple neck, 59 Roundback Contour and Dunlop 6100 frets
Alnico 59/Custom Hybrid in the bridge and 59/Jazz Hybrid in the neck
