Eeek Tube Troubles!

alright, so i was playing a lot yesterday on my mesa rect-o-verb, then today, right when i turn it on, there is an extreme loss in gain with some crackling, i'm guessing some of my preamp tubes are bad, any opinions?

Re: Eeek Tube Troubles!

Are there any other symptoms? I'm leaning on the power tubes, as it's the most common problem you have in tube amplifiers. The crackling and loss of articulation in the gain makes it a good bet. If I were you, I'd start with the power tubes. Or, if you're pretty damn convinced it's your PA tubes, replace the V1 and see what that does for you.

Re: Eeek Tube Troubles!

I would guess power tubes as well, sounds like the same symptoms I had when one of mine went bad.

Re: Eeek Tube Troubles!

It has been my experience that most problems with tubes are from the preamp tubes and not the output tubes, though anything is possible? Preamp tubes are less expensive. Can you first try substituting preamp tubes in the V1 and V2 positions? My Tremoverb used to be pretty hard on preamp tubes...Lotta gain those tubes need to tolerate..
