Effect Loops

I was just wondering what the advantage of running modulation (i think that's what you plug into the loop) effects through an effects loop over running them straight into the input. I love delay pedals and will be getting one sometime in the future, but I might not have an amp with an effects loop then.

Anyone care to explain the nuances of effects loops?

Effects loops are placed after the preamp so if you use a lot of preamp gain it is advisable to put modulation and delay effects in the loop. But if the amp is clean it is hard to tell the difference (maybe less noise).
