Effects like a Q-Tron?

I'm looking for an effect with unconventional sounds. I looked up the Electro-Harmonix Q-Tron+ on harmony-central, and liked the review of the sound. However, it seems that the effect has one terrible side; the reliability.

I want to spend approximately ~170$ on an effect which can give me ambience-sounding effects (spacey, water like sounds, etc). And it has to be something you can trust will work.

Could the Electro-Harmonix Micro Synth be a good alternative...?
Other suggestions are welcomed :)

Get a Q-tron+ and an Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail Reverb. The reliability issues lie with the user to an extent, not so much the product. If you chuck the damn thing around, it's bound to break eventually, same with stomping on it like a madman. I havent heard any claims of unreliability anywhere but on Harmony Central.

The Q-tron+ has a built in effects loop. Run the Holy grail in the loop of the Q-tron+ together, tweak the settings, and you'll get a sound identical to the verse of "Beyond the Grey Sky" by 311. Very ambience sounding. Now, if you already have a reverb, you could use that, and you dont necessarily need to place it in the loop of the Q-tron+, but check out that song by 311 and see what you think. I know for a fact it is that exact combination, and it sounds as good live as it does on the record, I've seen them play it.

Thanks for the reply. I will take a note of what you've said. :)

So, how would a Q-tron+ handle being carried around in a bag when going to jam-sessions...? In other words, it's portability...

well, EH is known for making big effects, or rather big boxes that house rather small circuit boards... assuming the bag doesn't get thrown around and it's packed nicely, you should be fine.

Uhm, what's the size of this wonderful thing...?

I see the effect on ebay for 170$. Should I buy it from ebay or look into stores on Manhattan.

Re: Effects like a Q-Tron?

I thought about a Moog MF-101 MoogerFooger Lowpass Filter, read a lot of good reviews about it. But I think it's a little expensive compared to the Q-Tron+.

Re: Effects like a Q-Tron?

I mean what kinds of effect are you looking for? You were talking aboiut a Q-tronn (envelope filter) then a Micro Synth, then a low pass filter...what sound are you trying to get?

Re: Effects like a Q-Tron?

Ok, uhm. A lot of different sounds. Ambience-related sounds. I've heard good things about the Q-Tron+, but I'm not sure. I'm afraid it's a little fragile.
The reason for why I mentioned the Micro Synth and the Moog, was because I thought they also could give me ambience-effects, but I'm maybe wrong..?

The Qtron is not as fragile as the people at harmony central say EH pedals are. I seriously wonder how they rate reliability there... is it by throwing it repeatedly into a brick wall? Seriously, the Qtron+ is your best bet. Combined with a reverb pedal, there is no better ambience sound out there, in my opinion. A synth pedal is going to make your guitar sound like anything but a guitar, and not pleasing for the ambience stuff. Get a Qtron+, dont listen to the harmony central stuff.

Hehe, ok. Thank you very much for helping me :)
No problem man, thats what I'm here for :laugh2:

Let us know how it turned out. The key to that ambience like in "Beyond the Grey Sky" is to also have a reverb as well as the Qtron+
