Effects Loop question/Problem

Reckless Abandon

New member
I have never use done. The 2000 I used to own had one but I did not use effects then. My 800 doe snot have one. I thought about putting an eq, a delay, or a noise gate in the loop of mine. When I hook it up. The sound is muddy, soft, and so different. Is something wrong with my amp or do loops just do this?

Re: Effects Loop question/Problem

That is because most loops are parallel and running at linelevels...
Pedals never had much buisness doing anything in a loop!

I agree, when you put pedals into the loop, you are breaking the all-tube path of your amp, and inserting SS stuff into it.

Re: Effects Loop question/Problem

Nothing wrong with that, if you do it right.
Seems that all the lessons regarding loops are forgotten these days:)
In the olden days, we used 19" reverbs, delays, eq's, and so on.
And to keep the signal good, a linemixer was used to mix the fully wet effect signal parallel with the normal signal between power and preamp, thus never loosing anything from the original signal, the impedance and volumelevels are quite different from a normal pedal.

oh, do elaborate...because I've always had the same problem with my amp.

Re: Effects Loop question/Problem

Well I used linelevel studio effects, at line levels, with the ability to go effect out only, just like a PA or studio setup.
Pedals are serial beings.....not really meant to be elsewhere but in front of the amp.

Re: Effects Loop question/Problem

But Rid... why do my delays sound better in the loop than in front? ;) (Sorry, no need to go down that path again)

I don't see why an amp designer shouldn't design to allow pedals in the loop, but I agree that if you like the sound of say, chorus in the loop, a line level chorus processor will sound better than a Small Clone.

Re: Effects Loop question/Problem

It's a strange subject. I've had my volume pedal and my wah pedals sound okay in a loop, just not much of anything else.

Re: Effects Loop question/Problem

Mostly because amps runs at linelevels internally to avoid noise, also the impedance is different than most pedals can operate under, you are just plain lucky that it works!!
Pedals are seriel, there is no comparison to a linelevel parallel setup and a pedal...as I have tried both kinds in various setups, setups for friends and other beings;)
Why make an inferior sollution???
