EJ Custom is a hybrid, right?

Dimarzio's DP211 supposedly reads out at 7K, series mode. I'm guessing the individual coils are something like 2.8 & 4.2... Is there somebody here who can very kindly do a measurement...? :1:

The EJ Customs use Dimarzio's Virtual Vintage "technology".

They use hex screws on the undersides of the bobbins in between the pole pieces to increase the inductance of the pickups. The increased inductance allows the pickup to generate more voltage(output) without the need for more winds on the bobbins. This makes the EJ's have a low resistance allowing them to be nice and clear sounding but also allowing them to have great bass response.

I really wish I still had a set.

EJ's are f'in sweet. One of my best pickup trial surprises over the last year was the EJ Custom bridge model in the neck position of a mahogany guitar. Clean all the way to nasty dirty, it rules.

Thanks for the info, the DiMarzio guys are some kind of geniuses, I'm sure. I went ahead and wound a neck humbucker with 42 & 42½ AWG to the about the specs I wrongly assumed for the EJ, and it's a sweet thing. Can only recommend it.

So true, as far as making weird and unique sounds through weird and (somewhat) unique technology, Dimarzio takes the cake. The EJ set, HFH, Norton, Chopper...other companies just don't make pickups that sound like Diamrzios do.

I realize how implausible this is, but imagine a Duncan/Dimarzio collaboration. The innovation of Larry and the craftsmanship and tone of Seymour. They could do sonically unbelievable things...

I gotta stop I'm gettin' excited :banghead:

I've always really wanted to try a Norton in the bridge of my explorer... I just think the name alone is really cool... Almost just sounds stoner rock and metal. I think of thick greasy chunk when I hear the name. So strange I'm gassing over a name of a pickup.

The people over on the Dimarzio forum eat, sleep, f*ck and breathe that pickup, for good reason, they sound freakin' rad.

Balanced, thick, harmonics fah days...it would behoove you to acquire one.

Re: EJ Custom is a hybrid, right?

Been thinking about it hard... that or the 59/custom hybrid. I'm happy with my Gibson 500T that I swapped an A2 in for mostly, but I recently got a Jazz Chorus amp and that pickup is VERY congested clean. Sounds very small and kinda blah. I'd ultimatly want a bridge pickup that sounds a bit better clean but still kicks with gain.

There was a post about the 59/custom hybrid from the tone fiend guy that addressed this and it looks promising. Norton appears to be a similar design... but done Dimarzio's way.

Funny thing is YEARS ago I had a 59/Custom hybrid. Wish I remembered what it sounded like lol.
