hey,

whats the overall opinion of an electro harmonix small stone phaser pedal?

im after a kind of phaser effect like at the end if red hot chili peppers dani california solo (right at the end of the song).

any opinions on it?

Re: el;ectro-harmonix small stone phaser pedals, opinions?

Its a decent phaser though a little limited in options as its only got one knob and the color switch so your not going to get much flexibility out of it. Its a good sound though for what its worth but again it can sound a little cliche. Sort of like the Small Clone and its obvious "Come as you are" tone.

Just depends on what type of sounds your after and if you really want control over the rate, depth, blend, how many stages the unit is using and so forth

Re: el;ectro-harmonix small stone phaser pedals, opinions?

I have one. I think it sounds great and I don't see a need for me to get another phaser. From what I know there is an issue with a volume drop when you turn the effect on. I got mine from analogman.com so it came modded to fix that for free. It also came with internal pots for tweaking the levels of volume and feedback. I haven't needed to use them yet since I'm quite happy with how it is now, but it's good to know that it's there when I want to start messing around. The pedal comes with a switch and a knob, very simple. The switch changes the "colour" from a more subtle phase to a very prominent psychedelic freakout. Turning the internal feedback trimmer pot up would make the colour down mode more like the intense one and the intense one like something crazier, and vice versa. The knob adjusts the speed. All in all a great pedal.

I find small stones to be very dark sounding, and I dont particularly care for them under distortion. I always end up going back to the Phase 90. But the small stone is a very in-your-face phaser, which I find great for single coils played clean.

It is a very thick phaser. I think it sound fine with distortion but where I LOVE it is when I use it with my fuzz pedal. It's so thick and rich with harmonics.

hi,

im after a kind of wild phaser that will allow really me to create some sort of recreation of the solo in danicalifornia by red hot chili peppers. will the get somehwere in the right direction?

thanks

Re: el;ectro-harmonix small stone phaser pedals, opinions?

I'm pretty sure to nail that, Frusciante is using a Moog pedal with tons of tweaking and options, very expensive. The small stone is a dramatic phaser, I think it would do great but not nail the sound as I'm sure you'd need a moog. In a way that solo almost has a flange characteristic even though it's a phaser. An analogman small stone with the internal bias pots added on would probably allow you tweak it into that territory and you could set the volume higher to give you a volume boosy going in to the solo. The analogman price isn't much higher than the normal price now that he does the volume fix for free.

hi,

any experience with belcat pedals? whats theyre phaser like?

im after a cheapish pedal really as im a bit struck fro cash at the moment. same with a fuzz pedal. i jusut dont know what to get.

Re: el;ectro-harmonix small stone phaser pedals, opinions?

No experience with those pedals. http://analogman.com/eh.htm Compared to most quality pedals' prices, $109 is pretty good especially considering it's under the list price and includes mods. If you were going for a cheap phaser/fuzz combo that worked I'd say small stone and big muff. The cool thing is that even though they are cheap, you'll find them on pedalboards alongside top notch stuff like fulltone. They are considered a standard by many. You could get them second hand for real cheap too, though in the case of the phaser the internal trim pots make it worth buying new. John Frusciante uses the big muff, so it would get you some of his sounds. Check out electro harmonix's website, john frusciante demos alot of their pedals. It's pretty sweet.

Re: el;ectro-harmonix small stone phaser pedals, opinions?

yeah, would you reccoend the big muff for a standard fuzz sound? is it quite 'powerfull?'

i might take a look at belcats delay and phaser pedals jsut to see what they compare to a full prices phaser pedal.

Re: el;ectro-harmonix small stone phaser pedals, opinions?

Yeah I'd say so, it's a good place to start for sure. It's a higher gain fuzz pedal compared to stuff used for 60's style music. I think it's silicon instead of germanium and i think it's got 4 transistors, which is more than most. http://www.guitarplayer.com/article/red-hot-chili/Sep-06/23160 This is an interview with Frusciante where he goes song by song through what pedals and gear he used to create certain parts on stadium arcadium. Big muffs are used by alot of stoner bands and they are all over the smashing pumpkins' cd's. As for price, I've seen both big muffs and small stones on here for around 50 bucks used many times. Maybe post a thread in the trading post and see if anyone has one to sell.

Re: el;ectro-harmonix small stone phaser pedals, opinions?

John's sound are very complex and layered using some modular analog synths. You can achieve similar results to what he's getting with some of the Moog pedals but those things are quite expensive, around $400+

As great of tones as he gets, and as great of guitarist as he is, he's not someone that you can try to emulate tonewise without spending a ton of cash to really nail his sound.

He really pushes things further and further each album though which I really love musically though (just not so great for those on a budget lol)

Just go with a EHX big muff and small stone though and as long as you don't worry about getting too close to his tone, you should be quite happy

EHX makes really nice musical pedals for very reasonable prices. They are probably my favorite brand overall when you add in value.

Re: el;ectro-harmonix small stone phaser pedals, opinions?

ive heard a few reaosns why i shouldnt jsut buy a small stone or a big muff though.

cant remmber exactly what they were but a tthe moment for fuzz im comparing the tweak fuzz and the big muff.

Re: el;ectro-harmonix small stone phaser pedals, opinions?

is there any reason why i shouldnt buy a big muff or a small stone pedal (USA or Russian...whats the diffrence?) new or used?

are there any other pedals in same or below price range i should consider?

any thoughts on tweak fuzz vs big muff?

thanks

Didn't you ask this EXACT same question a couple of days ago ?

No offense but I think you should save yourself (and others) some sanity and just pick something and go with it. You've gotten lots of opinions and as is the case with opinions, they are never all going to agree.

Big Muffs are great pedals, and I'm sure the Tweak Fuzz is fine as well. You keep asking about it so it seems like thats what your hoping someone will tell you to buy maybe ?

Maybe the best suggestion I could actually make for you is to just get yourself a cheap multi FX unit so you can play around with different FX and get an idea of what they do. Find out if you like a phaser or a flanger, a fuzz or distortion, and so forth. Then once you've got some understandings of what FX you'd like to use to make up "your sound" you can start buying some dedicated units.

Re: el;ectro-harmonix small stone phaser pedals, opinions?

I'd just say screw it and buy a second hand muff and small stone. If you don't like it you can just sell it and buy a tweak fuzz.

i do know WHAT i want. theres just lots of stuff i dotn know about these pedals and i cant try them out anywhere other than if someone i know has them (ive tried a tweak fuzz very briefly)

but its ok, ill stop asking questions.
