Ive been watching some Michael Thompson Clips lately, and he's playing these EL34 Amps that are killer! Can ya'll recommend me some EL Amps with that killer sustaining, chimy clean tone?

Re: EL34 Amps

I think both the new Marshall DSL/TSL series, and the Mesa Stiletto ace have good clean channels. Much better than most older EL34 amps anyway. Fender has always been the gold standard for clean as far as I am concerned, but there you are not using EL34s, and its a different tone.

Re: EL34 Amps

Fender clean channel is the industry standard in which all other amps clean channels are compared to, IMHO. I've played through many tube amps and I love the Fender clean channel. I think most Fender tube amps use the 6L6 power tubes and not the EL34. Comparing with my old JCM 800 (EL34) clean channel and my Pro Reverb (6L6) clean channel...
-Fender has alot more "headroom". It sounds alot more "fuller".
-Marshall has more of a compressed sound.

I think EL34 powered amps shine more than any other power tubes when they are cranked. The EL34 breakup is the best, IMHO.

I'm wondering now what an EL34 powered Fender would sound like.

Bottom line: for the clean channel, I'd use nothing other than a Fender amp. my pro reverb is very chimey and clean. the overdrive channel simulates a cranked clean channel very closely too. the sustain is very nice too. i can get a nice warm feedback when i hold a note and vibrato it.

w00t first time using multi quote thing haha

anyways, i think that vox are mostly el84 amps.

umm TRAYNOR 50blue!!!

you know what, for some strange reason i knew in the back of my mind they used EL84s. little tubes for little amps. :laugh2: those el84s get HOT!

i don't like el84s too much. they break up at all the wrong places and in the wrong ways.

Re: EL34 Amps

I'm kidding somewhat...I like the sounds from twins..but tweed is where it's at for Fender AFAIC.

Vox though...:smack: most of the time I wanna hurl. The only EL84 amps I've head that I really like are a couple of the 18W clones and the Gibson Goldtones. There is just something missing in the tone of an EL84 amp that drives me batty...some kind of frequency....they have no..ermmm..."guts".....and then they are too sweet on the top end (I think most refer to this as "chime"). Even a Fender twin set for pristine clean is full and gutsy.

Analogy:

EL84s =little european/japanese car horns :squeak: please get out of my way

EL34s: Pretty much any other horn on any other car :HONK: GET THE EFF OUTTA MY WAY

To answer the question though...I Think the Rivera Chubster has a great Fender like clean channel (black face or tweed) that gets into JTM45 territory with the ninja boost (its an EL 34 amp). Also a Bluesbreaker/JTM 45 has FANTASTIC cleans.

Try playing through the Peavy JSX. They are shipping now with JJ EL34's and sound AWESOME! The cleans are really thick and chimey and it is a true 3 channel amp.The dirty channel gets an awesome classic rock/blues tone and the ultra channel (despite what the skeptics say) is a good channel for metal. Actually I think they have JJ's in the pre section too. Anyway, bottom line, great cleans and crunch for under $1,500. Out!

agreed 100%.

i'm still convinced that no EL34 powered amp can have the headroom that 6L6 amps provide. that headroom has alot to do with good clean sounds. my EL34 jcm 800 sounded "nasal" in comparison to my fender.

Re: EL34 Amps

Yah, I do like the Fender Cleans. However after listening to some clips on www.jacksonampworks.com, im convinced that the chime, midrange, and sparkle is in the UK style amps. Any suggestions? Other than the Jackson stuff?
