Electric Slide Guitar

I have a old Yamaha SG500 set up for slide guitar with raised action and strung in standard tuning with 15 - 56s. Its open coil humbuckers were way too hot even when screwed down they refused to be tamed and I am looking toward suitable replacements - any suggestions? what about the humbucker sized P90s?

any input appreciated

many thanks

Re: Electric Slide Guitar

Welcome to the forum.

You have a couple of options. If you want to stay with humbuckers, you can try a pair of PAF class pickups. For slide, Seths, APH's, PG's, and Antiquities would be the ones to look at.

If you're looking at P-90 style replacements, the Phat Cats or P Rails would be options.

Re: Electric Slide Guitar

well, after this
Try Daddario XL strings.
Go to an axe shop & play some LP's until ya find the sound you seek. Then get those pickups.
in response to a closed question about 2 specific p/up sets in an explorer, and then the above post, i'm guessing you can see how i'd come to that suspicion
no offense intended.

Re: Electric Slide Guitar

Can you get covers for them? That would cool it down...
Going to .013 is still plenty heavy for slide (unless you're in open C or something) and would also chill it out...

Re: Electric Slide Guitar

i think the huge strings are part of the issue. you could get away with some really whimpy pups with those strings and it would still sound fat and loud. what are you running?
15-? ? ? ?-56

phat cats would be cool if you want to go p90, the prails might be too hot still. i have no idea what the pups are like in there now. do you know any specs on them?

Re: Electric Slide Guitar

Actually, Dave Hole, from Perth, Australia (records for Alligator Records) uses 15-54s, according to Dan Erlewine. He does that w/an ES 345. That guy is one killer slide player!

For pups, I agree w/Benjy 26 above.

Welcome!

Re: Electric Slide Guitar

Thanks for the advice everyone. Even when I was using the guitar normally strung with 10s it was a bit of a beast - the pickups reminded me of some di marzio super distortion HBs I played on an Ibanez in the late 70s I think. The pickups long since went into the bin so I've got a blank canvas so to speak. My slide playing is more steel like with no fretted notes adding some tones and textures hence me thinking of the Phats Cats and perhaps using the tone control to tame them a little if they get too uppity. Again all advice gratefully received. The 15-17-26w-36-44-56s [Michael Messer Newtone Electric Slide] give that steel like flavour and seem to help everything sing acoustically which is always a good start - big slab mahogany body on the SG500 by the way

regards

David

dave hole is a monster thats for sure. i wasnt dissing the heavy strings just pointing out that they change the response quite a bit since there is so much mass moving.

antiquity humbuckers or phat cats would get you some great tone. i doubt you would need the tone on the neck phat cat but the bridge can be a little rowdy in a good way but smoothes out nicely with a little twist of the tone control

Re: Electric Slide Guitar

What did Duane Allman use? Stock Gibson pickups, correct?

However, the thicker strings will produce more sound, thus giving the pickup a whole lotta love.

You're looking for the lowest-output pickup you can find, in that event.

Re: Electric Slide Guitar

duane did use stock pups but when he got the cherry burst lp he took the pups out of the goldtop he was using and swapped them. ive read that he thought the bridge pup from the gold top was a little stronger and one of the best sounding pups he ever heard
