Electro Harmonix Tubes?

Are they any good? i am looking at an 12ax7 and an EL84 to replace the stock tubes in an Epi Valve Jr Head.

They can be bright on the top. I dig em in a darker amp, might be a bit toppy with that amp. What speaker are you running through?

I just posted my first time recording with some new ones i got.

I got them from the tube depot and got 3 pre amp tested for high gain 12x7 and 4 el 84's. It is in a crate v3112T with the tone tubby speaker with a dumbed down attempt at playing say it aint so by weezer. I like them a lot, more gain and still pretty good clean.

I guess I will find out how they sound sometime next week. I have a set of four 12AX7EH, and one 12AT7EH (for the reverb), for my Mesa 50 Cal. in the mail from Tube Depot. I couldn't pass up on the price, especially since a Chinese or Indian preamp tube (from another amp) in the V1 position really livened up the tone. I have absolutely no idea how old the Sovtek 12AX7WA tubes are in my amp, so I gotta start somewhere.:)

I've got an eh 12ax7 (says ecc83-7025 actually) in my valve junior right now. Sounds pretty nice, Better than the stock sovtek at least. Every eh 12ax7 I've used has had problems with mircophonics though. So I dunno what to say. It sounds Nice in the vjr, But the microphonics can get irritateing sometimes.
But, I'm usein the Vjr combo. So you Might not have as Much of a problem in the head version, I dunno though.

I like them. Especially the 12AX7LPS preamp tubes. The power tubes aren't bad either.

I like them more as a preamp tube than power tubes. I'd go with JJ's all round in that amp. If I wanted to increase clean headroom, I might use an EH-12au7 or EH-12at7 in the preamp section. Thats the only reason I'd go with EH tubes.

Never tried their power tubes, but did not like the 12ax7's at all. Seemed too bright and fizzy. I really like the JJ's, Golden Dragon and Tungsol for 12ax7's and Ei's for 84's.

If you want a more balanced preamp tube, go with JJ tubes.

+1 i had electro harmonix 12AX7 in Fender Pro Junior and replaced em with JJs and it was cleaner (in a good way) and warmer and also chimier just overall better.

I've got one in the V1 slot of my Marshall. It's quite a bit brighter than a JJ IMO.

I just got the first hour on my set of 12AX7EH pre's in my Boogie, and this post seems dead-on accurate when comparing the tone to old the Sovtek (age unknown!) 12AX7WA tubes:

TOPPY!...EXACTLY! My Mesa was rather dark in the first place, which I like, and these tubes have made my amp more bright. This is not all bad for some, as the "perceived loudness" in the precence is definitely there. It kinda pushed amp one notch closer to a Fender Blackface.

I am not sure that it is the tone I am ultimately looking for, but this is a knob-fiddly Mesa product, and it usually takes me two weeks to "adjust" to new tone. The good news was Tube Depots service, and Fed Ex that delivered one day ahead of schedule.

Update:

I removed the 12AX7EH from the V1 preamp, and re-installed one of the old Sovtek 12AX7WA in that spot. It really improved the tone, by taming the top-end. I am still liking the 12AX7EH for V2, V3, V5 so the experimentation is getting closer to what I like.

JJ's are great tubes, get the select matched 12AX7's -they're very sweet sounding pre's. I liked the EH EL84's in the mesa rocket reverb I had, that amp ate tubes but the EH's were rock solid with really good grind when cranked, great rock tubes.

I am itching to order a JJ, and a new production Tungsol to try in the V1 spot in my Mesa. Amp G.A.S!!!:blackeye:

I am literally fighting off the urge as I type!:chairfall: :smack:
