Electronics Question

Well I'm gettin set to order the parts for my Warmoth and I was just wondering if any of you knew places to get electronic parts (switches, pots, caps, jacks) for less than Warmoth is asking. I totalled up the cost of all the hardware and it came out to $126.04 -- seems like a lot to me but maybe i'm just cheap.

Anybody know a good retailer? How 'bout Radio Shack?

I hope the 126 is with pickups because if it's just hardware i can't imagine it being that much. i get all my stuff from a local guitar store all that fender replacement stuff.
i am not sure exactly what you are getting however. i am talkin a volume (6.50) a tone (6.50) a 5 way (i think 10.00) and the jack (can't remember) wire is cheap caps are also cheap (the fender pot comes with one cap, however i used one i already had).

radio shack imo is a little sketchy for a 5-way and the pots on my guitar but that's just me. I see fender replacement and get excited.

Already checked Radio Shack and they don't have the pot values you need for a guitar. And yes, they are very expensive, especially if you're building a LP or similar. Caps are next to nothing, they're around $.50. Pots are around $6 and switches and jacks are around $10.

John at Black Rose recently sent me 4 pots, and he even wrote the resistance values on the bottom of each one

I have had good experiences with GuitarElectronics too, but they don't carry Orange Drop capacitors.

For tuners, bridges, etc. I've actually found Warmoth to be price competitive unless you start going for cheap parts (I mean cheap quality as well as price). IMHO it's bad juju to put cheapo parts on a good quality guitar.

I'm with you ... mouser, digikey, hosfelt, MCM, newark ... for electrical/electronics components ... but like you sais ... you gotta know what you are looking for ... the StewMac, Allparts,Dimarzio (one or two things that are different there) ... those guys for the more *guitar specifc parts* ... Hey Chip , mentioning Orange Drops ... which series do you use the 225 or the 715's.

Yeah, Mouser is great...they have just about anything you could ever need, and their prices are very good. But you do need to know exactly what you're buying. The Mouser catalog I have is thicker than the local phone book. It's not the type of catalog with lots of pictures and descriptions though. Occasionally, I've gotten parts that looked a lot different than what I was expecting. They have all the jacks, pots, switches, caps, and soldering stuff you'll need.

My only problem is that mouser seems a little slow in getting a catalogue to you ... The Newark catalogue is incredible, especially for ICs ... and very well laid out ... it's a phonebook also ...

Have a look at antique electronic supply. They're supposed to be quite good, although I haven't personally tried them.
