Elixirs rule.

Just restrung my Les Paul for the first time in about four months or so, and the sound of new strings just rules. Maybe it's all new strings, or maybe I just really like the Elixirs, but the clarity of new strings always brings a smile to my face.

I really like elixirs but they've gone up to £17 a pack in my local shops and im always too impatient to order online.

So I generally use DR tite fits if they're available or dunlops because well theyre £3 a pack and better than EB/Daddario to my ears.

17 pounds for a set? No, thanks. What's a pound worth in terms of dollars these days? I paid about twelve bucks for mine, if memory serves me right.

The current rate according to XE.com is

1 GBP = 1.60095 USD

so $27.21. It's utterly ridiculous as they used to be about £7 tops then suddenly shot up a couple of months back

Thats about the equivalent price in AUS$ in a shop too.

I've just gone online and bought a box of 12 a few times....about $125 with shipping.....effectively 1/2 price.

I like elixir nanoweb strings.

on the other hand, they do have some unusual qualities.

I had some elixir strings on my guitar which somehow got dented over a few frets, as if they had been hammered agaisnt the frets.

this caused dead frets.

I get about 3-4 months per set. Sometimes as much as six, depending on rotation of 4 guitars.

I was changing 4regular sets every 2 weeks because the got that grippy feeling and dead sound.
At 5bucks a set that was 80 bucks a month.
$320 over a 4 month period.

Compare that to 4 sets at $13 ($52)

No brainer.

They're terrific strings.

Too bad not all coated strings are the same.
I recently bought some DR Dragon Skins and they were very dull sounding out of the box.
Not warm like say a EB Rock n Roll pack of strings. Just dull and lifeless.

Dropped some D'Addarios back on that guitar and it came to life.

Love those strings. They are all I play right now. For me, it's about the sound but also about the resistance of the coating when I slide. I just feel at home with that specific brand.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Nanowebs sound dead at all.

maybe after something like 4 months...

honestly if i can afford to I'll change them as soon as they get "dirty" and the coating starts to flake off severely.

I also like Elixers but I dont like that they cost so much. Now pretty much all brands make their own coated strings that, to me, sound just the same. Try daddario exp's or the ghs coated strings. They cost less than elixirs and feel and last the same.

I mostly just like them because they keep their new string feel and sound much longer than regular strings. Nothing worse than restringing your guitar, playing it for an hour or so, then picking it up the next day to find the strings covered in finger crud and rust. Yuck!

The one time I tried them on my acoustic they didn't last longer than a month. Not what one expects from coated strings.

I HATED the Cleartones I tried lol. They bring back bad memories...

I would buy more elixir nanoweb packs if they made 12-56 and a 13-60 gauge packs. D"Addario (with a wound G) last just as long to me though. I also really like the GHS Coated strings. GHS make great strings. But nanowebs were a little weird as after a while it seemed that the wound strings started to look very frayed, but they felt and sounded new still.

Does anyone else think that elixers feel more bendy? By that i mean flexible. It sometimes feels like i can take the high e string and bend it clear to the a string.
