EMG 18 VOLT MOD, Ibanez RGT220A, Orange #4 - the Results

Hey guys. EMG plus 2 batteries in a neck thru RG Prestige? I dig the results and had a blast rocking out in this video. If you don't mind please watch it and let me know what you think?
I'd prefer Blackouts at the end of the day but have no qualms about the tone from the 81/60 in this particular instance :)

18v does have more thump in the lows and a less compressed drier midrange crunch with more cut to the highs,,,,,,but, I don't like it as much overall.
About 5yrs back I made a couple conversion harnesses (looked like little flux-capacitors lol, like on Back To The Future) and I tried 18v in a few different guitars.
If I were tracking both sides with the standard EMGs (81,85,60) then going 18v on one side and 9v on the other might really be the ticket.

9v has to my ears what I expect from the classic actives, which is some extra tonal compression and a reduction in picking dynamics.
18v does kind-of bridge (p.i.) the gap between active and passives, but with my rig it always ended up a bit to dry and stiff for my preference.

Nice playing man.,,,,,,,,and I love that guitar!!!

Most insightful! Picking dynamics are important to me which is why I probably dig 2 batteries driving the traditionally dry sounding 81 in particular. I wonder how the 57/66 set may benefit or not benefit from the 18V mod?

Thanks so much for the compliment and for watching :D

I used to run EMG bass pickups at 18v. I actually liked the guitar pickups on 9v better.

I don’t use them at all now.

The 57/66 use the same preamp as the standard non-X series. So you can expect the same resultas as running the 81/60 at 18V.

Thank you for the info. I think I'll dig the 57/66. Hoping to try a pair in one of my own guitars soon ;)
