Emg ?? 27 volt mod? 60 vs 85?

Im getting ready to do the 18v mod to my WM526. In looking at it, I could very easily run 3 batteries. Would this work or benefit? Or is that simply overkill?

Next, how does the 60 differ from the 85? My axe has the 85/81 set in it. Id like to get alil more sweetness if I can and Ive never played a 60.

Thank you!

I have not tried running EMGs at 27v, but apparently 18v is plent to get the extra headroom.

The 60 is much brighter than the 85. I think you might want a 60a.

Re: Emg ?? 27 volt mod? 60 vs 85?

ive heard that the difference between 18v and 27v is really barely (if not at all) audible, far less than the change from 9 to 18

never used a 60, but i want one from clips ive heard. kinda singlecoiley sounding.
im not big on the 85 in the neck. i think it makes a much better bridge pickup.

If you're staying with EMGs I would take an 89 over the 60. Hell if you can track down the 58 than you've got a great neck pup.

58? never heard of that one.. 89? how does that one differ? I forgot about that one.. All you ever hear about is the 85/81 and 60 anymore

I originally planned to pull the emgs (as I always do) but this guitar was kinda purpose built with them in the equation, so I want to give it every chance I can before I go changing it too much.. next step will be blackouts. I wish I could afford another one so I could put a C8 in it!

the 89 can be split into a single coil (EMG SA?). If it is really important to you to have the single coil option in the neck then get the 89. However, the 89 (and 81tw) have their own specific quick connect cables so you are stuck with them unless you want to re-solder everything. However if you stick with the 81, 85, or 60 you can move them around as you please. Also, you can drop in blackouts just as easy. I say stick with the plug and play options if you're going to be changing pickups alot.

Now, the x-series that just came out, that is all plug and play but you have to set up your guitar and all pots/switches/etc with it, you can't just buy one x series pickup.

I have an 81TW/89 set up. I find myself using the 89 in single coil mode most of the time, either by itself or paired up with the 81tw in humbucker mode.

I find 85 neck or 89 humbucker mode in the neck just too dark.

I think EMG have jsut released the 81TWx and 89x.

I really wish they made a 60atw though.

+1

The 60 is a much better neck pickup in my opinion. I find the 85 to be too dark and boomy in the neck.
Really do like it in the bridge though :)
