EMG 81 brootz

I won’t hear a bad word about the 81 for metal rhythm. Especially at 18+ volts where all the common complaints about them (compressed, sterile) disappear. The split 89 running at 18v (currently at 24) is one of the most gorgeous clean sounds I’ve ever heard.

It's painful to hear people complaining about the compression of an active or built-in modular boost, and then using an overdrive or boost pedal with all their passives.
There are definitely pros and cons either way, and I like both ways or even a mix of the two to be honest.

Totally haha. It's all just tools in the toolbox. Pluss in my limited tests, the guitar it's in makes a difference too.

In my Strat clone (the clip I posted), the metal rhythm is tight and radio-ready, the cleans are sweet and lively with extra harmonic information. Took probably 3 minutes to dial in the tone on the video. In my SG it's all pretty bland by comparison - the metal rhythm is less refined and less tight, the cleans have less harmonics and sweetness. How much is inherent to the guitar versus how much is based on how I play the two guitars, I don't know. The SG naturally is a more compressed sound so the EMG 81 just ends up feeling really flat and boring. However I often add a lot of compression to my Strat tone, so in the Strat clone the compression from the EMG 81 is very welcome. I am also way more comfortable and "sure-handed" on Strats than on the SG. I think its going to land back in the Strat clone. The Strat gave me instant recognizable brutality (the clip I posted), whereas the SG has been more of a struggle with IRs and my signal chain to get it to where it sounds like the songs I love and not just "generic distortion tone".
