EMG 81 VS heavy metal livewire

has anyone compared these to combonations, right now i have an 81/81 set in my guitar, and im wondering if these have the monotonous sound that EMGs are known for.

Re: EMG 81 VS heavy metal livewire

I'm the opposite of nearly everyone on here. I've got a set of Livewires, but I've never tried the EMGs.

I think a lot of the monotonous sound the EMGs are known for comes from the setups/rigs a lot of people use with EMGs - especially for metal. Most of the EMG users on here haven't had those problems.

Try and back off on the gain of your amp if you feel you're getting a stoic tone. Try and let the wood of the body breathe.

Re: EMG 81 VS heavy metal livewire

ive tried everything, no matter how much i screw around with my amp(randall rg75g2) gain, treble, mids, bass, contour, reverb, it always has a very predominent "set" tone to it that wont go away as opposed to changing when u turn an eq knob, i had the same problem with my old amp to so i know its not the amp, there is no versitility in it:smack:

BluesGuy has a great idea. This will definitely give you a more woody tone.
I use EMG's most of the time and I love them. I run all my EMG-equipped
guitars on 18volts. It makes them more sensitive to pick attack and more
dynamic.

If this doesn't work, try another set of pick-ups.:usa1:

It definitely changes the tone when using the "18V mod" as it's known, or at least I thought it did.

Re: EMG 81 VS heavy metal livewire

yea ive been meaning to try that 18 volt mod, i need another battery connecter, anyone know where i can get one??

I just got a bunch at an electronics store one time (like DIY stuff, not a chain store).
