Emg 81

so you think i shud get a Jb bridge but waht shud i put in the neck?

what i REALLY think is that what we think doesn't matter b/c we don't know what sound is in your head. that being said, i think you should try a distortion in the bridge position and a jb in the neck position. if you could coil tap these two pickups, you would probably have more different sounds available to you than you could shake a stick at. i say the distortion b/c it has high output and a good frequency response. this should satisfy your metal desires. for the hendrix/bluesy stuff you'd need to roll off the vol and tone pots a little, but it would work. this is also where the jb comes in handy. i think jb's are just extremely natural sounding. emg 81's are not natural in that you can put them in any guitar and they all sound almost identical, a jb doesn't control the flavor of the tone from your guitar, it adds just a pinch of something...anyway, sometimes you just gotta explore your options.

one last piece of advice. long story, though. back when van halen was unsigned/unheard of, they got the chance to go on tour with ted nugent. one night after eddie got finished with the sound check, ted asked if he could play through eddies rig. eddie just handed him the guitar and said sure. ted played for a minute, then said "it doesn't sound anything like you!". eddie just held up his hands and wiggled his fingers at ted.

i remember always saying, "if i just get this and that, i'll have the sound i want". this is true to a degree, crappy equipment is always gonna behave like crappy equipment. the real truth is that YOUR tone is in how YOU play. i can hand you my guitar and you will sound nothing like me, because i have MY OWN tone. if i had spent as much time working on my tone as i did looking for my tone, my time would have been well spent.

i will now step DOWN from the soapbox...

Thank you, i was thinking of trying that, Or the Zakk wylde set...
But do these get cleans cuz im like paranoid from the pickups i have right now since they dont have cleans...

For an example of an EMG 60 in action, listen to Nothing Else Matters - Metallica

I'm pretty sure that was done with a 60....

Awsome dood i love the sound of that song, so iuno if i shud get a 85 or 81 neck yet...

Now, you need to decide whether you want an 81 or 85 in the bridge....

I really like the 81 in the bridge for high gain stuff. If you're into Metallica, Slayer, Zakk Wylde, they all use an 81 in the bridge.

If you want some more medium gain, rock and roll type stuff, you might prefer an 85 in the bridge, as it's a little fuller sounding with alot more bass.

Re: Emg 81

Both EMG60 and 85 clean up beautifully! The EMG85 gives you a tight, balanced and agressive sound without losing definition, harmonics scream too! I don't think I have to explain the 60's sound to you, since it's been done several times and you were getting that one anyway.

If you want high output without the regrets, brightness or piercing sounds get the 85. Don't be fooled the 85 packs output, I believe more measurable output compared to the 81 (that's what the old EMG site said anyway), it's just more balanced and open so it doesn't sound as harsh.

Re: Emg 81

NEM was done with the 60 in the neck. all clean guitars, except of some other things (chorus strumming was a gibby 2neck SG on the 12 string.. and lots an lots of others, but the main geetar was the eet fuk explorer) i dont know which pup was for the solo though.. have to watch the documentary again and see if i can see the selectro switch on which position it is

So that's why I could never get the chorus to sound right.... :smack:

Re: Emg 81

yeah look like the 81/60 would be the best one for you.

i hope to be getting a guitar with 2 85's in it soon

ROFL tell me about it.. and the chords look way weird also. the way you can play it is like hammet plays the backing on S&M
