Anyone have experience with these dual mode pickups in both bridge and neck position? I'm considering putting two of these in my Ibanez.

Re: Emg 89

well the 89 is the 85 except you can split it... people put the 85 in neck and brige and it sounds awesome.

Re: Emg 89

The 89 or 85 have a nice tone in the neck pos. Very smooth. I also really like them in the bridge. Crushing tone. Typically, you'll find the 81 in the bridge and 85 in the neck. If you want more punch, put the 85 or 89 in the bridge.

Re: Emg 89

The EMG site tells you the 89 is a splitable 85.

It's not. It's a different sound, not as mid honky as the 85. Great pickup.

Re: Emg 89

The 89 works good in the bridge spot...It doesnt sound exactly like an 85 but close... it has a little less output... The split tone is usuable though i think the 89R with the single coil side farthest from the bridge sounds better...

Re: Emg 89

Any of you guys find these actives fatter than passives such as the Duncan Custom, etc? I hear EMGs give a huge/fat signal.

If by fat you mean bassy, the 85's pretty fat sounding. The 81 is all mids and highs, and the 60 is almost all mids.

Re: Emg 89

How about the single coil sound? Is it passable/more single-coil like rather than simply a "split humbucker" sound?

Re: Emg 89

The split sound drops the output and it loses some bass and mids... Its a decent usable sound... but it doesnt sound exactly like a lone single coil would... If its going in the bridge the 89R with the single coil side away from the bridge sounds better... The other way the highs are kinda tinny and annoying... I havent flipped one around in the neck... Hmmmm... that might be worth a try tonight when I get home...

Re: Emg 89

I have an EMG 89 in the bridge position of my Epi Les Paul. If you like EMGs, then by all means get it, just make sure you like the crunch of EMGs. I'm switching to Duncans because I don't like the EMG's sterile sound.

Re: Emg 89

So the split isn't as good as a strat huh? But is it better than passive pups when split? I don't like my stock DiMarzio/IBZ pup's tone when split, and looking for pickups that does both hum and single fine.

Re: Emg 89

Doesn't the 89 drop to an S or SA when split? If it does, I wouldn't worry about the single coil tones. I have a set of SA's (Dave Gilmour set) in my strat and they work beautifully. :burnout:

Re: Emg 89

yeah, its the SA split i think (traded mine a while back)

good pickup, especially if you want a single guitar to cover a whole lot of genres... the cleans from the SA are really nice. +1 to the guys saying 89 is different to the 85, i do remember them sounding different (i didnt pay much attention to connisseur tone back then ;))

I recently put a 81 in the bridge and a 89 in the neck.
I also put up some clips to show the difference between them, check out at: My Clip Post

Thank you. You've confirmed my GAS attack for EMG 89s... The single coil one is THE sound I'm looking for.

Re: Emg 89

Great! I can also tell you that I "turned" the 89, so the EMG logo is backward. That's because I've got itin the neck and when splitted the single coil is as close tothe neck aspossible... Sounds better in my opinion.
