emg recommendations....

hey everybody!!!

my plan for the future is to get an ibanez rg1570, and with that im definitely gonna switch the pups out. after playing my friends guitar that has the zakk wylde set i know that i want an 85 for neck. it sounded great for shred stuff. but i dont know for bridge? the 81 he had was much much brighter, so i was thinking to put an 85 in the bridge as well. how do you guys think this would be?

the 85/85 combo sounds good to me but i want your opinion.

Re: emg recommendations....

I've always had a partiality towards the 85 compared to the 81.. it just seemed more versatile.

Or, you could get 89's (85 with splits, as you should know)... so you can split them.

What you reckon moom?

i reckon you kick ass for answering so quickly :headbang:

the 89 sounds like a cool idea, being able to splti them and all :?:

maybe, but chances are this would be my metal/shred axe so probably not. i got enough versatile guitars(les paul, san dimas charvel) so now i can use this one for the all out metal attack on little children!!!!

Re: emg recommendations....

85's it is then!

I'm sure you have - but if you haven't, use the search function in the forum to dig up old jewels of information. I remember researching EMG's here, there was a fair bit of useful information.

Re: emg recommendations....

85, very versatile in both positions and you'll be able to get a wider front of sounds. Note, the 85 neck might sound darker to you, but that's just the bridge being slightly brighter. I'd get an 89 set if I were you, just can't beat that versatilly, but that's just me. Active single coils are slightly different than passives, so just to find out how different I'd get that 89. I believe you'll get the same sounds as the SA, that's what EMG says anyway

Re: emg recommendations....

I guess there's no disadvantage on having the splittable feature moom... despite the extra cost... I think you'll find it a worthy investment. Have a hard think about it. It will come in good use, its like four pickups instead of two, at much much less than double the price.

Re: emg recommendations....

haha rainmaker!!!

but i made a deal with my friend for the ibanez. he said he'd buy the RG and when i buy the zakk set, he'll just give me the 85 he has so he'll have a 81/81 and i'll have a 85/85
hopefully he can work it out, iu want that damn guitar!!!!! as soon as i get a job though, i'll get that damn mark 4!! thats first priority :)

Re: emg recommendations....

Oh yeah that would be an option too! haha..

Make sure you get recording again... it's been a bit of a draught for recording lately.

I just worked out how to plug my cube into the comp so I need some software... but I'm not going to hijack your thread :p

Re: emg recommendations....

Moom really you've got so many things you want, try sorting out what you could actually get or you'll get disappointed. I'm in the same spot, and don't end up like me, it's stressful and really annoying. Whenever a buyer says he wants something, they back down, something breaks and has to be repaired, doesn't have enough cash. Leaving me in a tight spot, since I can get a good deal on a Knucklehead which might be snatched away right in front of my nose :crying:

Re: emg recommendations....

well you see, the mark 4 is gonna be the first thing. the guitar will come later :)

i just need a ****ing job!!!!!!!!

Re: emg recommendations....

I sure hope you're a better guitarist than I was at your age, or your parents are spoiling you! LOL :laugh2:

Re: emg recommendations....

i would go for a 85 bridge(much warmer and balanced than the 81) and a 89 neck so that i also got the possibility to split it and get a nice single coil clean neck pickup tone.

If it's an all out metal axe, I'd go 81 in the bridge. It stays well defined and percussive even under high gain.

If you want more versitility at lower gain settings, go 85 or 89.

Keep in mind that Mesa is going to be a darker amp. If you get the chance, you should play test an 81 and 85 into one down at the store (if it's possible).

Whew!! I thought for a second I was the only one here who still likes the 81 :)

i didn't really think the mark 4 was a dark amp :?:

anyways, i tried my friends warlock on the mark 4 with the zakk wylde set. it sounded great, neck pickup was nic and smooth and the 81 was nice and metallica..ish :laugh2:

if i end up not liking the 85 i'll just take back the 81 im gonna give him :)
